Dr. Dick and Dr. Bob Gillman delivered their first baby at 1 a.m. on Sterling Avenue after answering an ambulance call at Odell Thownpoon bench. They wrapped mother and child and sped to Wadsworth Hospital. The Thompsons have four other children at home.
George Sandrock is the new president of the Rittman Chamber of Commerce following last week’s director elections. He co-owns Hershey and Rohrer with a Sunset Drive residence and family. Sandrock announced appointments including Carl Bradford as senior vice president and Allan Broadhurst as vice chairman of the merchants division.
About 120 members of the All-Ohio Youth Choir will dine at the local school cafeteria before their Saturday concert at Rittman High School. Two Rittman seniors Marsha Bartlett and Elzie Neff join other area youths in the All-Ohio choir sponsored by the music department. Proceeds from the concert fund choir expenses and a European tour planned for summer. The event has Governor Rhodes’s blessing and supports a statewide tour with an estimated $900 per person needed.
City Manager Laughlin invites all community groups to send representatives to a February 18 meeting to shape the future of recreation. The session will cover six proposed categories including summer and senior programs and pool activities. Ike Ramsier is named commissioner over Little League and will oversee swimming pool operations.
Testing begins at the old Vimeo Noodle Company plant at Industrial and College Streets for a binder to be used with asphaltic products and certain rubber types. Dr Harold Bode and Jack Rauh of Akron install equipment for experiments. They leased a quonset structure from the Silaski Brothers of Akron. No production staff will be hired until tests finish and binder ready for large scale production.
A local note details a yearly minstrel program with zing and razz ma tazz. It promises songs and audience belonging and invites community members to attend the performance on March 18 19 and 20.
Mike F. Hubiak of 283 West Sunset Drive collided with a parked police cruiser on West Sunset Drive at 2 am Thursday. The blue lighted unit warned of a broken water line and sustained light damage. Hubiak faced charges of driving while intoxicated and failing to observe an officer signal.
City council approved by unanimous vote an ordinance to close Diversion Hall effective March 15 1965 citing poor repair and high renovation costs. Meetings will move to suitable city venues with staff helping groups relocate supplies and a possible post office land deal with the school board discussed for a future plan.
John Zivick and Ray Mullett were chosen co chairmen to spearhead the 1965 United Fund drive in Rittman. Both longtime UF volunteers have served in leadership roles and are employees of the EEES Corporation of America.
Robert B Bauman 26 of Seville dies from injuries in a truck accident between Seville and Creston. Services Thursday at Gillman Funeral Home 1 pm and Apostolic Christian Church 2 pm. Born April 26 1938 near Rittman he lived in the area most of his life. He leaves wife Betty Lou a son Robert eight months and two daughters Beth Ann and Betsy. Burial at Apostolic Christian Church cemetery. Burial officiated by a church minister.
Two Rittman youths Fred Shiffer and Tom Breece will be awarded the Eagle Scout rank at a Court of Honor during Bay Scout Week. The Troop 410 gathering at American Legion Hall on Saturday February 13 includes other awards for Life Scout Robert Merckle and several second class and merit badge recipients.
Mr and Mrs Robert Bauer current owners of the Rittman Bowling Center seek to build new alleys at East Sunset Drive and Seneca Street. They asked Russell Frey to erect the structure. Frey requested rezoning land from residential to commercial. Frey and brother own two lots. Merle Heffelmann owns two. Planning Commission to study. after review a public hearing will be held if approved. Construction would begin immediately with a completion date of August 1 and a 12-lane facility.
A 185-year-old Rittman youth was placed on probation until he reaches juvenile court. He faced charges of disorderly conduct, consuming intoxicants, throwing beer bottles from a car, resisting arrest, and running away from home. Judge Leo Kindswatter sentenced 30 days in Wayne County Jail but suspended the term pending future conduct. the youth had already served 13 days awaiting trial.
Warren Jewelry relocates to 83 South Main Street beside Wrights Drug Store. Owner Warren Keister confirms the shop will open after basketball season ends, replacing the former South Main Street location.
The Parent Teacher Association schedules a Thursday meeting at First Street School cafeteria to view Who Cares About Jamie, a film about adult child communication. William Cecil Rittman, a high school guidance counselor, will lead the program.
Ronald Woyat is appointed to the Rittman Board of Education to fill the vacancy caused by William Mays resignation. The lifelong resident's term expires January 1, 1966 ahead of November elections. He is a 1951 Rittman High School graduate and draftsman in packaging at the Packaging Corporation of America. He is married to Jeannette Winkler and lives west of the city limits on County Road 504. his parents are longtime locals. Woyat has served on the community planning commission and supports the Booster Club.
