Community notices mix a camera mishap with birthday and hospital news. Local names Bud Sohar Richard Sohar Cheri Hall Wanda Thacker and Esther Campbell appear amid births at Orrville and Wadsworth hospitals. Anniversary acknowledgments and civic notes close the item.
Dr. William Walker elected chief of staff at Orrville Community Osteopathic Hospital during the annual meeting. Dr. Donald Rose named vice president. Dr. Virgil Rose of Orrville becomes president and Dr. Alton Lehman of Mt. Eaton serves as secretary.
Milton Township volunteers are being recruited for a Heart Fund canvass this month. Harley Joyce of Sterling coordinates the drive and notes that heart disease accounts for more than half of deaths nationally. The 1966 slogan is Give so more will live.
Requiem Mass for Fred W Krebs 65 of 62 West Ohio was held at St Ann's Catholic Church. He died Friday morning at Akron City Hospital after six weeks illness. A Rittman resident since 1918 he worked as a watchman for Morton Salt Company and planned retirement Jan 31. He belonged to St Ann's Holy Name Society Rittman American Legion Post 423 and Wadsworth Eagles Lodge. Survived by four sisters Rose Steiner Bay City Mich Helen Hummel Wooster Amelia Parker Canal Fulton. Burial in Rittman officiated by Fr Dennis Farr.
Ron Winkler of Rittman was named president of the Wayne County Rural Youth Council at a Wayne County Cooperative Extension office meeting. Ken Riggenbach and Ben Hartzler of Sterling joined the 12 member council. The group will host a potluck supper and square dance for past members on Feb 19 and a round and square dance on Feb 25.
Honorable Robert Secrest of the United States House of Representatives will speak at a father and son breakfast at Saint Peter and Paul Catholic Church school hall Sunday, February 13. Holy Name Society will receive communion in a body at 9 a.m. mass preceding the breakfast.
The Value Center plans a 19320 square foot department store in Rittman near 77 Sunset Lanes bowling, wiring in steel beams via Macomber Steel Canton, with 140 by 138 foot front and back garden area, 246 parking spaces, gas heating and electric cooling, offering apparel appliances garden supplies and hard goods. The project forecasts spring construction and aims to draw a 25 000 person trade area, while interviewing prospects for multiple small shops in Arcade.
A charter review meeting is tentatively set for February 23 at City Hall to hear suggestions for changes. City officials discuss extending council terms to four years, removing write in ballots, and studying ward partisan elections. Subcommittees will study the solicitor’s status and ballot forms, with planning and zoning groups reporting the charter works well.
The Chamber of Commerce outlined a plan to rejuvenate downtown and older shopping districts in Rittman. City Manager Willard Laughlin urged reviewing the Voght-Ivers master plan with two years of extensive development for the square.
Akron University Orchestra led by Dr. James Lerch opens its program with Konstantinidis, a blind pianist, performing Beethoven Concerto in C. The group also plays Gluck Overture to Iphigenia in Aulis Copeland selections, under associate conductor Henry Smith.
City Manager Willard Laughlin presents the annual report brochure detailing the city’s achievements over the past year and progress across departments. The Rittman Press distributes the document to residents.
Fat Men's Club fun night at Rittman High School is canceled in favor of the Fine Arts program. The athletic night is postponed and the more strenuous program will resume next week.
Mrs Ida E Zimmerly 38 of Wadsworth mother of Carl Zimmerly of Rittman died Wednesday at Wadsworth Rittman Hospital after a short illness. She leaves sons Floyd of Clearwater Fla and Robert of Akron and a daughter Mrs Maude Kane of Burbank. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery Wadsworth.
James K. Leedy Wooster based Wayne County prosecuting attorney and Ohio political figure will speak at the Thursday February 17 PTA meeting. He will discuss Tell Me How Juvenile Delinquency Affects My Child as this year's PTA programs theme. A room contest will award prizes to rooms with seven or more parents present. Leedy is a veteran World War II alumnus of Muskingum College and Ohio Northern University and seeks the Republican nomination for state senator in the new 19th district.
Congressman John Ashbrook will visit Rittman on Thursday February 17 for two get acquainted coffee hours. The public is invited to attend either or both. Mrs. George Hileman and Mrs. Marvin Adams host at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. respectively, with the event sponsored by the Rittman Women's Republican Club.
