Navy ship carries heavy cargo to Antarctica on Deep Freeze mission
Navy Warrant Officer Laurence A. Brown of Marshallville sails from Davisville Rhode Island aboard the attack transport USS Arneb for her sixth Antarctic voyage supporting Operation Deep Freeze. The Arneb carries a 35 ton D-9 snow caterpillar and reactor parts for McMurdo facility planned for spring 1962. The Arneb will return to Norfolk in May after aiding scientific operations. Dirty Water Problem Still Plagues City
City Manager Charles Mann reports ongoing complaints of rusty water and plans to bring in water expert Merrill Riehl of Youngstown for tests on February 23. The well near the River Styx is off due to a faulty chlorinator, so chlorine will be concentrated in one well, making south end water stronger. Hydrant flushing will resume when weather allows, and air pollution testing equipment remains in operation awaiting a forthcoming report.

Overheated stoves draw firemen to two calls
Tittman firemen answered two alarms last week. Thursday they rushed to an apartment at the corner of West Sunset and North Main and extinguished a small fire caused by an overheated furnace. Friday volunteers responded to Bascon Pelfry’s Salt Street Extension home where an overheated stove caused light smoke damage and firemen remained on scene about an hour.

Teachers Seek $200 Yearly Pay Increase in Rittman

Clarence Petit Buried at Rittman Cemetery
Clarence D. Petit 55 South First Street died Sunday evening from a cerebral hemorrhage. A long time resident of the Smithville Rittman area, he worked as an electrician at Packaging Corporation of America until 1959 and since September served as school patrolman at Ohio Avenue First Street crossing. He was Milton Presbyterian Church member, former village councilman and treasurer, and an honorary life member of the Rittman Fire Department. Survived by daughter Frances Bennett, two brothers Raymond of Wadsworth and Arthur of Mansfield, and sister Lena Hoover of Mansfield. Services 1:30 p.m. Wednesday Gillman Haines Funeral Home, burial Rittman Cemetery. Rev. James Watt officiating.

Rittman to Get 250 Foot Radio Tower Proposal
Ohio Central Telephone proposes a 250 foot self supporting tower behind its central office to beam short wave signals to Wooster. The system uses a large dish antenna and a metal mirror at Wooster to redirect telecommunication signals. Cost is stated as well over $100,000 but cheaper and more dependable than extra land lines. Construction could begin within weeks if approved.

Riceland man killed in camtruck crash identified
Funeral services for a Riceland man killed in a camtruck collision on Ohio 5 near Easton January 11 were held Tuesday at Monbarren Funeral Home in Doylestown. The 41-year-old victim, Sam Williams, identified by the Wayne County Sheriff's Department as Charles M. Lucas of Cincinnati, had lived nearby four to five months and worked at Riceland Truck Stop.
