An appeal in the Rittman paper notes that cancer condemns about one in eleven people and shows a photo of eleven local residents. It urges readers to welcome a volunteer who will explain the fight against cancer and seek financial support in the coming days.
Rittman Publishing Company announces bringing in two younger partners to boost stability and growth. George W. Alexander, already with the company since 1954, and Gordon K. Smitley of State College will join by February 27. Frey emphasizes maintaining control and offering employee stock ownership to strengthen service to four weekly papers.
The Marshallville Council on Tuesday evening approved a franchise for East Ohio Gas Co to serve Marshallville once 130 residents sign up. Gas collectors will be at the town hall February 27 and 28 to collect deposits from interested residents. Also noted are births for Mr and Mrs Charles Champlin Jr a girl February 2 and Mr and Mrs Lester Canter a boy February 4 and Mr and Mrs Ray Patterson a boy February 7.
A meeting of the Friends of the Library is set for 7 30 p m Friday in Ri council rooms. All representatives of groups and friends are urged to attend. The public is invited. Also BG basketball hosts Wadsworth Saturday at 1 30 p m in Rittman High room with fifth and sixth graders. BG won 26 22 at Chester last week. Public may attend with no admission fee.
The World Day of Prayer will be observed in Rittman Friday Feb 17 with services at 7 30 p.m. at Milton Presbyterian Church. The event is sponsored locally by the council of churches.
The Doylestown Fire Department Auxiliary women will conduct a house to house cancer canvass Thursday evening February 16 assembling at the new fire house at 7 p.m. They will be joined by fire department members and return to the fire house for refreshments after the canvass.
The Creston Cancer Drive opens its fifth year with Mrs Edward Miller as chairperson. She announces a team of coordinators including Mrs Howard Allen Mrs John Elliston Mrs John Murray and others guiding the community fundraiser. The drive is presently underway.
In Milton Hughes court four men from Creston Wadsworth and Rittman were fined 10 plus costs each for a tavern fight but the fines were suspended. Sam and George Hatten Dale Trent Frank Wilson faced the charges. Erma Viers was fined 10 plus costs for intoxication in Mayor John Baldwin court.
James W. Frye named Mr Interluctor for the Show Boat Minstrel by the Rittman PTA. Shows run March 9 and 10 with Sunday afternoon and Wednesday evening rehearsals. Frye previously held the post last year. Production directed by Mrs Robert Davis.
The Sterling Cancer Drive runs February 13 through 18 with Dale Wirth as chairman. Key canvassers include Gloria Moore Ruth Rastorfer and Mary Chase. Additional solicitors to be appointed. Coin containers placed in local businesses. Residents missed by the door to door effort may contact Wirth.
The public is invited to ward party events February 10 from 8 to 10 pm in Recreation Hall with door prizes and a fry pan raffle. American Legion Auxiliary meets February 13 at 8 pm in the Legion Home with entertainment and a refreshment committee.
A call for additional volunteers to canvass 1200 homes in Rittman for the cancer crusade was issued at press time. About 70 women will begin Monday, calling on every home to discuss seven cancer danger points and to leave literature while soliciting contributions to the county cancer fund.
