Village Cancer Drive Kicks Off February 14

The Rittman Cancer Drive, led by co chairs Mrs. K W Osborne and Mrs Ralph Gwaltney, begins February 14 for several weeks. A long list of local volunteers, including Mrs E C Burker and Mrs Robert Doman, assists as canvassers in this organized village wide solicitation.

Wayne County officials announce no May primary as neither party fields enough candidates for available posts in Rilb an and surrounding towns. Fall ballot slates include Mayor John Baldwin Democrat. Collision in Orr injures Mrs. Clason in fair condition

A two vehicle crash in Orr on Saturday afternoon sent Mrs. Robert Clason of 193% S Main St to hospital in fair condition. The truck driven by Lorren Boughman of Navarré collided with Mr Clason’s car, causing the injuries and sending both vehicles off the road.

Three Injured In Rt 94 Crash In Wayne County

Weather contributed to a Saturday crash on Route 94 near Rittman in which three Stobaugh family members from Akron were injured. William, Janet, and Connie Stobaugh were taken to Wadsworth Hospital after their car hit a station wagon driven by Carl Vargo of Rittman, then rolled over into a ditch. The Vargo vehicle, driven east in a wagon owned by Wade Rohrer, could not stop on slippery pavement as Taxi driver James Dockery stopped to left turn, causing the collision.

Polio Drive in Rittman Reaches Over Three Thousand Dollars

Rittman polio fund totals 3417.77 to date with expectation to exceed 3500 as co chairs Mrs. R D Wenger and Don Stepfield thank workers and contributors. The tally includes 1317.52 from Mothers March night and 473.74 from the school.

Three named to head local drive for Children’s Hospital

E. J. McConnell Ralph Krabill and Robert D. Wenger are named chairs for the Rittman drive to raise 2,309,000 for 125 more beds eight more operating rooms and a service building. Campaign head J. E. Trainer reports 1,512,849 raised with 800,000 still needed. Wayne County contributions exceed 25,009. Wayne Young chairs the 29-county service area excluding Barberton and Akron.

Rittman Board Approves $200 Teacher Raises for 1955

Rittman Board of Education voted to increase teacher salaries by 200 a year for all brackets starting September 1955. A B degree start rises to 4200 and up to 4400 in twelve years. Masters start at 41407 and rise to 54700 in the same period.

Map Plans For Red Cross Drive

Chairmen and assistants for the annual Red Cross fund drive were named at a meeting at Mrs. W. W. Bodager home with Rev Father Hoot of Orrville presiding. Rittman drive leaders for March are Mrs Robert Donald Glassner and Mrs James O Kitts. A Feb 14 meeting at Mrs Bodager home will assign institutions and materials. The village and rural area will be divided into 20 sections.

Wm. Schneider Jr Dies in Auto Crash

William E. Schneider Jr 22 died after an automobile crash west of Wadsworth early Saturday. He had worked as a mechanic for Don K Freed Inc since 1954 and lived with his brother at 413 East North Street Medina. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Waite Funeral Home. Interment followed in Medina.

County Tax Representative Visit Set for Feb 24 in Rittman

A Wayne County Auditor's office tax representative will be in the J. W. Erye Real Estate office Thursday morning February 24 to take returns, according to Wayne County auditor Earl Lautenschlager.

Teachers Hear of Teaching In Korea

Miss Edna Horn president of the Rittman Education Association introduced Miss Mary Harbage director of elementary education for Akron schools who spoke on My Year In Southern Korea. Harbage chaired a committee that went to Korea to build an educational program for Southern Koreans organizing 215 members including interpreters and Seoul University professors who led six week workshops for 15 000 Korean teachers during the year. She plans to return to Korea in 1956 to continue the work.

Vern Phillips Named Rittman Cubmaster

Announcement by the local Boy Scout Committee confirms Vern Phillips as Cubmaster of Rittman Pack. He succeeds William Swartz who resigned after three years to allow his son’s transition from cubbing to scouting. Phillips previously served as scoutmaster in Rittman.

Gunman Threatening Eastonites Apprehended After Car Crash

A manhunt ended with the capture of a gunman who allegedly pulled a pistol and threatened residents of Easton and Doylestown after crashing into a ditch on Eas Gasestie Peswsaerel. The Ohio State Highway Patrol led the search, aided by local agencies.

Perry Gets Probation For July Drunk Fight

Otto Perry of Rittman received one year probation after pleading guilty to assault and battery. He was indicted by the September grand jury for injuring Thomas Robertson in a July saloon fracas that left Robertson with a broken nose and ankle.

Walter Townsend Sentenced for Doylestown Café Break-In

Walter Townsend aged 19 was sent to Mansfield Reformatory on a 1 to 15 year term after pleading guilty to breaking into Himmel's Cafe in Doylestown last year. Police report no arrests in Ritt man during the past week.

Flu Outbreak Lowers Rittman School Attendance

Rittman schools report severe flu impact with 120 grade and 42 high school students absent on the worst day. Tuesday and Thursday saw 134 absences, 98 grade and 36 high school on Tuesday, 100 grades and 34 high school on Thursday. Total enrollment 1106, about 85 percent present at peak. some districts across the state closed due to high absence rates.

Barn Destroyed by Sterling Farm Fire In Ohio

Late Tuesday a barn on a Sterling area farm near Sterling owned by Ernie Wald was destroyed by fire. The Russell Patterson family occupies the farm home and Ford Kreider operates the farm. The loss included straw oats farm machinery 38 hogs and six cattle. Firefighters from Milton Twp Fire Dept and Rittman Community Fire Co prevented damage to the home and nearby structures.
