Gas line upgrades expand residential supply in Rittman

Ohio Fuel Gas Co installs a six inch line on E Ohio Ave serving Madina, N Seneca, Industrial Sts, and E 2 Ohio Ave, plus an Elliott St line by the Erie RR tracks serving the south end. Eight and ten inch pipes are being laid. Total cost about 7300 dollars. Crum Construction Co of Grafton handles the work, to be finished this week.

Council debates recreation program and salary controversy

The council mulls a long running recreation program dispute at Monday’s meeting. A Feb 9 deadline looms as Recreation Director Homer Pyre’s $3600 annual pay is challenged with a possible salary repeal triggering a new three reading ordinance and staffing doubts. Also up is a request to rezone 15 lots on N Main Street from residential to commercial.

Residents rebuild after historic flood hits Rittman area

In Rittman and Bitimie, residents finish cleanup two weeks after a record flood. Damage exceeds 100000 dollars with many losing clothing and furniture. All 50 families displaced have returned to rebuild as plants resume operation and volunteers aid with food clothing and money.

Board to choose new member for Rittman School Board

The Rittman School Board will meet Wednesday to appoint a replacement for George Griffith who resigns February first after moving to Tennessee. A circulated petition nominates Alvin Steiner of RD Rittman, though board members say it has no legal effect and expresses voter preference.

Minstrel Show Interlocutor George Alexander Named

George Alexander named interlocutor for the upcoming PTA Minstrel Show to be held March 13 14 at the Rittman High School auditorium. He returns for a second year and co writes half of the show with Charles McCoy. Alexander is vice president of the Rittman Press and lives at 21 Fairmont Ave with wife Dorothy and two sons. He moved to Rittman in 1954 after Continental Can Co. in Pittsburgh. He is Legion Commander of Post 423 in Rittman and active in the Lions Club, twister, and past Carnivale chairman in 1958.

Death Notice for Emma Gertrude Pratt in Bellaire

Mrs Emma Gertrude Pratt 69 died in Bellaire City Hospital after a long illness. Services were held Saturday at Walter Bauknecht Funeral Home Bellaire. She was born in Monroe County and a Church of Christ member. Survived by husband two daughters one brother and three sisters including Mrs Ella Bigler of Rittman. Several nieces and nephews in Rittman survive.

Watershed progress discussed at Chippewa meeting

Members of the Chippewa Watershed Association will meet Wednesday at the Ohio Boxboard Co to hear a flood control update. Burnett, association chairman, will report on state meetings. Soil Conservation Dept survey crews return for two weeks of work aiming to finish by summer. State Water Division study expected by April.

Ohio Senate appoints 35 page nominees including Eugene McConnell

Eugene McConnell is named a Senate page in the Ohio State Senate. The appointment, arranged by state senator Danny Johnson of New Philadelphia, places him among 35 chosen statewide. Pages are college students who can balance a few hours weekly with classes to spark interest in government affairs.

Canvass Launches Crusade To Fight Cancer In Rittman

The 1958 Cancer Drive starts Monday in Rittman under Mrs Ralph Gwaltney and Mrs Kenneth Osborne. March ers will canvass the town next week to raise funds toward Rittman’s $1800 goal. American Cancer Society officials say no fixed maximum goal is set for the Crusade, adopting a “goal unlimited” approach.

Services were held Tuesday afternoon at Gillman Funeral Home for Orra H Fry 87 who died Saturday at his home 16 S State St after a lingering illness He worked 37 years as a machinist at Ohio Boxboard Co Born January 22 1892 in Wooster Apple Creek area he later lived in Ashland and settled in Rittman with his wife Ethel Marie Surviving are his wife a son Harry of Rittman two brothers Arthur of Youngstown and Carl of Mansfield three sisters Grace McCliggage Polk Louella Strip Mansfield and Blanch Kierns Lexington and two grandchildren

Francis Marion Champlin Dies at 88 in Ohio

Francis Marion Champlin, age 88, died Monday in Orrville Osteopathic Hospital after a lingering illness. Born in Grayson County Kentucky he lived in Glouster 65 years and later moved to Rittman to be with daughter Grace Smith. Survived by Mrs Smith four other daughters three sons and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Interment in Glouster Cemetery. Rev Miles E. Hoon officiated at services held Thursday at Wiley's Funeral Home Glouster.

Library group to study ideas for better service

A special open meeting of citizens will be held next Tuesday at 8 p m at Rittman Library to consider suggestions for improving services. The event is called by Friends of the Rittman Library with reports from several committee chairs. The Wooster Library Board has asked for county wide input and a county district library, a proposal previously rejected by Wooster, with Doylestown Creston and Shreve seeking similar change.
