The Chamber of Commerce Board of Trustees supports Postmaster Harold Mongey in seeking larger quarters for Rittman’s post office. They urge Congress to place Rittman on the priority list again, citing community growth and rising mail volume as justification for a new facility.
The Rittman Chamber of Commerce urged Congress to extend government control of the Willow Brook Housing Project from three to five years. The group warned private sale could worsen conditions and urged the city to have the land acquired and sold as a single unit if needed, noting the federal Housing Administration threatened action.
Jane Morris of Neffs Ohio married James Petit of Wadsworth Ohio in a Saturday ceremony at the United Brethren church. Rev John Freymeyer read the vows. Attendants included maid of honor Bonnie Morris sister of the bride and bridesmaids Ellen Jamison and others. A reception followed at the American Legion Home with 100 guests from Canton Akron Ashland Barberton Massillon Wadsworth and Rittman. The couple will reside east of Rittman after a brief wedding trip.
Jim Hile announced this week that Eugene Gish has been added to the Hile Motor Sales force. Gish will assist Chuck Stauch in the used car department and also sell Kaiser Frazer cars as part of the expansion program to improve customer service.
Rittman Boosters Club holds a Tuesday Feb 8 show at 8 pm in the high school auditorium to raise funds for athletics. The program from WWVA Wheel ing features Cow boy Phil and Golden West Girls Abbie Corny Corn Sisters and Gay and Tena with comedy songs. Ticket sales are through boosters members and local businesses. Proceeds will fund advancement of Rittman high school athletics. Doors open 7 pm.
Rittman Rotarians heard examples of international cooperation in solving economic and social problems by Mexico and the United States when Don Bolt, renowned lecturer, spoke at a Thursday noon meeting at the United Brethren church. The speaker was introduced by Dr. E. R. Alexander, president.
George J Allarding former Rittman High coach becomes acting superintendent of Mansfield Reformatory starting February 1. He has served as assistant superintendent since May 1947 and will step up as Supt Arthur L Glattke takes over the State Welfare Division. Mrs Allarding, Kathryn Kinney of Orrville, has ties to Orrville and Rittman.
F H Bailey returned home after attending the funeral of his aunt Mrs Clementine Bailey of Wayne West Virginia.
Major Vahey described Salvation Army activities in Rittman and Wadsworth during the Lions Club weekly dinner at the Legion Hall. H. L. Davidson chaired, Charles I Rohrer presided, and James Schwartz and A C Judy were admitted as new members.
International speaker Don Bolt told a Rotary Club audience at Rittman High School that chances of a third world war are fading as the Marshall plan aids fringe nations. He argued China’s independence limits communist control, criticized the UN as a debating society, and supported independent pacts like NATO.
Appointment of four Chamber committees to work on civic jobs was reported at the Board of Trustees meeting Monday night. The Board will meet regularly on the first Monday of each month.
Rittman extends the polio drive to next Wednesday announced by E J McConnell chair. He cites late start due to late appointment notices and notes generous gifts including a $20 Cub Scouts contribution. Donations accepted at Rittman Savings Bank or in store boxes.
Doylestown edged Rittman 52 to 50 as both teams battled for lead and momentum. Rittman's late press narrowed the gap but fell short, with Smith and Konich leading Doylestown and Doylestown maintaining a slim advantage through the final minutes.
