Sherman Dalbey named president of the Rittman Chamber of Commerce at the first meeting of the year. John Winkler elected vice president, with Robert Bodager reappointed secretary and Ralph Krabill treasurer. Bodager has served as secretary for five years.
The Guiding Light quartet of Rittman sponsors a weekend of singing with the Pathfinders, heard daily on WRFD in Worthington Ohio. They will appear Saturday at 7 30 p.m. at Country Baptist Church Akron Sunday 10 a m at Baptist Temple Canton Sunday 2 to 4 p m at First Baptist Church Rittman and Sunday 7 30 p m at Wooster Baptist Temple Wooster.
James W. Frye named Mr Interlocutor for the PTA Minstrel Show to be held in February at Rittman High School. The event features a cast of 50 with performers including Chuck McCoy George Sandrock Sherman Dalbey Ed Bernhardt Bob Davis and Andy Stuff.

Ten representatives from local clubs attended a second meeting of the Committee to Probe youth reading in Rittman Mogigdy evening. They discussed national issues and reported that local comic dealers had not replied to letters. The group voted to invite dealers and the high school student council to the next meeting on Tuesday March 1 and to request cooperation from the Rittman Ministerial Association.
Mr and Mrs Bruce Brickel of Wadsworth welcomed Donald Ray at 2 48 pm on January 26. Paternal grandparents are Herr Brickel of Rittman and Dwight Pendley of Rittman. Other newborns include a boy for Lloyd Emch of Rittman on January 29, a girl for Lynn Zeigler of Doylestown on January 29, a girl for James Herwick of Doylestown on January 30, a boy for Boyd Crum of Rittman on January 31, and a girl for Marvin Frase of Rittman on January 31.
The Rittman Rotary Club will screen Nature's Children during the noon Thursday luncheon at the E U B church. Bill Maus reports the film is the highlight, with Junior Achievement representatives to discuss their progress as part of the program.
Minnie Frey announces Jitter Bug lessons at the Recreation Hall every Wednesday at 3 45 taught by Marilyn Harrington. Glasses are open for junior and senior high school boys and girls at 25 cents per lesson.
Mr and Mrs Homer May and children Roger Dale and Della Gail traveled from Orrville to Huntington West Virginia Saturday after a week visiting Mrs May's sister Mrs Charles Bowen of South State Street and Mrs Jay Robinson of Sterling Avenue and her two brothers.
Mrs. Karl Gillman reports more than 2800 collected by the Mothers March on Polio with over 1300 from the march eve, extra contributions from industry churches and schools, and continued coin collections in town. Additional gifts are expected to push the total past 3000 as captains and solicitors are thanked for their work and cooperation.
Mrs Porter Melvin was named president of the Ritman Sterling Council of Church Women at a Milton Presbyterian church meeting. Other officers elected include Mrs W H Hauenstein as vice president and Mrs Basil Hardgrove as secretary treasurer. World Day of Prayer observance planned for February 25 with speakers arranged.
The Rittman High School Concert Band under Vernon Reeder will present its annual Winter Concert Thursday at 2 pm. The program features National Emblem March, Pleasant Valley Overture, King of France, Belle of the Ball, Billboard March, NC-4 March, American Folk Rhapsody, Clarinet Polka, Deep Purple, Blues in the Night and more with guest conductor Lester and student performers Rhetta Armbrust Janice Mallory Dolores Trogdon Judy Sparks.
A six inch main behind the Branigan building on the square ruptured late Sunday, cutting water to buildings around Ohio Ave and Main St for several hours. Digging halted service briefly while crews located the leak, and several basements flooded. During repairs workers cut a telephone cable, leaving downtown phones out of order for hours.
Congressman Bow discusses the administration’s policy of firmness in the Far East with emphasis on Formosa and the Pescadores. He notes Congress supported action to deter war, cites Korea lessons, and backs President Eisenhower’s restraint without prior Congressional approval. He urges UN involvement for a just solution and highlights risk assessment.
Richard Rastorfer of Seville won two tickets to the a-Theatre in Rittman by correctly naming the farm of A. E. Jeffers near Creston on Rt. 3. No reader identified the prior mystery farm, Roy Beichler of Creston, correctly.
In a hard fought game against Orrville the Indians pulled away late for a 67 to 59 win. Ritrian led with a strong performance while teammates contributed key baskets and defensive stops to secure the victory.
K W Osborne was elected president of the Wayne County group of the Wartz Medina Holmen Guidance Center Inc at the Tri-County meeting held at Trinity Evangelical and Reformed Church in Wooster. Other officers include Mrs Paul Mills Secretary Mrs Kenneth Glasgow and Lester Ghek. Dr James Knopp reported 200 patients interviewed since September with ages 3 to 80 and noted the clinic’s policy to see new patients promptly for initial interviews.
Funeral services conducted Tuesday at Fredericks Funeral Home for James H Perry 63 who died Saturday at Wadsworth hospital after a week with tuberculosis. Father Farrell officiated. Survivors include Jeanbyy of Lancaster Pennsylvania and an address unknown brother. Perry remembered as one of two local bank robbers in North Fairfield Ohio June 13 1949, with Paul Boyes. getaway car wrecked and car owner Trent Boyes traced. Paul later arrested in Miami Florida.
Mrs Sophia Gmitter 70 of 354 N Seneca St died at Wadsworth Municipal hospital Monday night at 9 o clock. A Czech native, she lived in Rittman 17 years and was a St Ann church member. Survived by husband Andy two daughters Rose Peresta and Pauline Price both of Barberton three sons John Barberton Andy J Joseph Ritman and four grandchildren. SERVICES at St Ann church Thursday Feb 3 at 9 30 a m Rev Farrell officiating Interment St Nicholas Cemetery Barberton Friends may call Frederick Funeral Home after 1 p m Wednesday.
Private funeral services were held Friday for 11 week old Larry Rock son of Mr and Mrs Galen Rock of Rock, at Fredrick Funeral Home. He died Thursday morning at Akron's St Children's Hospital after a month as a patient. Survived by his parents one sister Karen one brother David grandparents Ralph Rock of Rittman and Frank Platz of Wadsworth maternal grandparents.
Funeral services for 77 year old Mrs Metta Galehouse are set for Wednesday at 2 PM at Monbarren Funeral Home Doylestown. She died Sunday in a Barberton hospital after two weeks as an operative patient. Burial is with Dean Chestnut in Competers. She was mother of Dennis Gideon and well known former American League pitcher Wade Andree is listed as a relative among several grandchildren.
Billy Graham presents a new Hour of Decision evangelistic film Storms of Life at First Brethren Church in Rittman on Sunday at 7 30 pm. George Beverly Shea Cliff Barrows Ted Smith and Paul Mickelson provide songs and music with no admission charge. Doors open 7 pm and local gospel groups provide pre service music followed by children’s entertainment.
Mayor John Baldwin seeks re election as incumbent Democrat without opposition in the primary. Harold Cormany, Republican, also unopposed. Board of public affairs seats to be contested in the fall with Wade Rohter Arthurs Bauman Vernon Stein and others seeking delegate posts. Multiple names listed for clerk treasurer and board positions. Incumbent Musser and former board member Wenger noted among candidates. Mayor Baldwin previously served 1940 to 1944.
Rittman residents were cautioned by Police Chief Charles Heffelman to guard homes during absences, especially at night, after two break ins in two weeks. Art Bauman’s home and Paul Brown’s were entered. silver dollars and a watch were taken. Neighbors were urged to watch for vacant houses.
A country comedy show starring Crazy Elmer and his company comes to Marshallville School Friday at 8 pm. The Marshallville American Legion backs the event with tickets available at the leg ion or from members. Admission is 75 cents for adults and 25 cents for children.
Rittman Cancer Drive plans announced by co chairmen Mrs. K W Osborne and Mrs. Ralph Gwaltney. Wayne County Cancer Society Board members Mrs Basil Hardgrove Mrs Ralph Krabill Mrs Robert Davis and Mrs Sherman Dalbey assist. House to house canvass to start February 14 with captains and solicitors appointed.
Freedom Crusade Columbus to be run in Wayne County with Rus sell W. Frey of the Ritt man Press as chairman. It backs Radio Free Europe and has White House support to enlist people year round but concentrates during Freedom Week February 12 to 22. The crusade aims to inform peoples behind the Iron Curtain and encourage them to reclaim freedom.
Mrs. Walter B. Keen who has been visiting her sister Mr. Charles Wilson and family for the past few weeks returned to her home in Riverside California.
