Rittman Fire Dept Reports 1938 Calls and Damages
Fire chief E W Winkler announced the Rittman volunteer department answered 17 calls in 1938. Twelve in town four in outlying areas and one false alarm. Damages were 3500 for contents and 1410 for buildings. Firemen total turnout was 242. A 1937 comparison shows 16 calls and 3835 in damages. A meeting is planned for February 10 at City Hall to organize a Wayne County volunteer firemen association with invited state officials.

Insurance engineer William M. Parks of Travelers Insurance told Rotarians today that for every death there are 29 minor accidents and 300 near misses. He urged focus on safety or accident control and cited rising accidents in Ohio department stores, mills, and auto use blamed on lack of courtesy. Discussion also covered Ohio driver license law. Armor and two handed swords from Japanese warriors will be shown at the 1939 California World's Fair Fine Arts Palace.

Thomas Wheeler 76 died Wednesday morning at niece Mrs Samuel Welch home. Funeral Friday at 2 p m at Ebert funeral home with Rev CE First Baptist? Wesleyan Methodist church officiating. Burial in Rittman cemetery. A carpenter he slipped on ice five weeks ago fracturing his hip leading to death. He came to Rittman from West Virginia five years ago. Mrs Welch sole survivor.

World War Veteran Guy Linn Dies in Cleveland
World War II veteran Guy Linn died Wednesday morning at the Marine hospital in Cleveland. Funeral services are set for Saturday at 2 p.m. at the home with Rev. Bud Hurtzler officiating. burial will follow in Doylestown with IT C Auble & Son of Orrville in charge. Linn lived four miles north of Smithville en route and last worked as a machinist at the Ohio Boxboard Co. He was transferred to Cleveland a month ago after heart trouble. Survivors include his wife Ruth, a daughter Rich ard, and his father Arthur Linn of Marton. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday night. Ironwood is described oddly here as hard, dense, dark-colored, and sinker in water.

Neighbors report the Shoemaker family from southwest Sterling arrived near Russellville Alabama after 49 days on a covered wagon trip called the Prairie Schooner. They left November 14 selling farm equipment and include Mr and Mrs Shoemaker with four children Bertha Roy Donald and Kenneth.

Three Rittman Boys Put On One Year Probation
Walter Kelly Paul Kely and Carl Schaffter were arrested by Marshal Heffelman after suspected theft from Rittman Dalry. They confessed and pleaded guilty saying they gained entry through a rear window on two nights January 14 and January 19. They were placed on probation for one year and ordered to attend church each Sunday and repay the stolen money. They are to report to the Canadian coast area in late May.
