Council supports City Manager Charles Mann’s appointment of Coy Drake as cemetery superintendent despite Cemetery Board member C B Shook pushing for Evan Musser. Drake’s $354 monthly pay contrasts Musser’s $400 request. discussion halted as hiring is deemed city manager’s prerogative.
Santa Claus will visit the fire station in Rittman Friday at 7 p m to hand out 650 boxes of candy apples and goodies to local children. The event is organized as part of a Christmas outreach by the town.
Services were held for Mrs Edna Thompson 71 mother of Delphine Thompson of Rittman who died Monday at Kettering Hospital. Former Rittman resident and four year hospital patient she is survived by her husband Ford five sons Harold of Creston Robert D of Loudonville Donald of Miami Fla Frederick of South Carolina and Richard of Berlin 20 grandchildren and two sisters. Burial followed in Rittman Cemetery with Rev Clifford Leach officiating.
Mrs George Snyder and Mrs Mack Wyatt hold the winning tickets in the annual Merchants Division holiday promotion. A $500 top prize will be drawn at 11 am Friday with two alternates posted publicly. If the first number is not claimed by Christmas Eve, an alternate may collect.
Rittman Public Library announces hours for the holiday season. The library closes at 5 p.m. on December 24 and remains closed for Christmas. It reopens at 3 p.m. December 26. A New Year closure occurs at 5 p.m. December 31 with reopening at 3 p.m. January 2, 1963.
Rittman merchants plan a city wide promotion with a pre inventory sale next week. Participating shops promise drastic reductions up to 50 percent on items from appliances to cars and clothing. Ads will appear in the Rittman Shopper and Rittman Press.
George Kaser 68 of Millersburg died Thursday night after a long illness. Born 1920 to Levi and Mary Messerli Kaser, he married Irene Conrad who died earlier. Survived by three sons Paul of Clearwater Florida Donald and Herbert of Millersburg, two daughters Mrs Paul Snyder Wooster and Mrs George Cox Freeport, his mother Mrs Mary Kaser Apple Creek, sister Mrs Tavey Franks Apple Creek and 13 grandchildren. Two brothers and a child died previously. Services held Monday in Millersburg.
Rittman will flood the ice skating pond south of the tennis courts as part of the winter recreation program boost. State co recreation directors Jerry Whims and Ike Ramsier thanked the community for help this past year and noted several more projects planned for all ages.
Services were held Saturday for Allen B Shoup of Wadsworth brother of Jacob Shoup of Rittman who died Wednesday at Wadsworth Hospital after a short illness Shoup 34 had lived in Wadsworth nearly all his life and had been a grocery store and service station operator He leaves his wife Lillia a son Howard in California another brother Ralph of Wadsworth three sisters Mrs Elizabeth Kreider of Wadsworth Mrs Hettie Kreider of Wooster and Mrs Nancy Steinke in Indiana and one grandchild Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery with Rev Philip L Gould officiating
Jerry Knapp and Elmer Hilson purchase the Rittman Laundromat from John McCormac at 15 East Ohio Court. It will be Nap Hil Laundromat Inc with remodeling and new self serve machinery. Grand opening planned for January in Creston.
City workers receive a 3 2 percent wage increase affecting multiple departments. The action lists Lindsey Williams James Witzberger Robert Simonton and others among staff beneficiaries in a local government settlement.
City employees gain raises totaling 3100 annually with Police Chief and Fire Chief increases and department heads receiving higher monthly stipends. The council also rejects a merchants committee request for 200 lighting funds and adjusts overtime, annexation urges, and budget balancing actions.

Ed Musser completes 15 years as superintendent of the Rittman Cemetery Association. He built the 14 acre grounds, mapped graves, added sections, planted 70 trees, and devised tools to speed work. He plans to remain nearby and may travel after spring fishing trips.
The preliminary court hearing for Mrs Glenna Mills of Rittman was postponed by at least 30 days. Mills faces an intent to kill charge in the shooting of her husband Kermit Mills two weeks ago. He is reported improving at Barberton Citizens Hospital from three gunshot wounds.
Community response in Rittman and Cleveland helps obtain 24 pints of fresh blood for Mrs Nelda Miller of St Vincents Charity Hospital Cleveland. Rev Muller reports eight or more calls and several donors from a past list, aiding open heart surgery scheduled Thursday. The family and Rev Miller express gratitude for the support.
