Jim Simonton of Rittman, son of Bob and Virginia, began lessons at 16 and has become a certified private pilot with support from friend Dave Brown. The family recalls his self-made achievement as he gains flight experience while neighbors paint curious canisters for a curbside project by Bob and Jo Arnold.
Larry Hudson was appointed police sergeant at the Rittman Police Department after a civil service exam. He is 6 feet 4 inches, 235 pounds, with a year and eight months on the force. He and his wife Sandra plan to move to Rittman soon and are attending college courses in police photography and political science.
Orville Slone 53 of 62 North State died unexpectedly Tuesday at his home. He worked 14 years in the Packaging Corporation of America Power Dept and was a Church of God member. Born March 21, 1914 in Big Rock Virginia he lived in Pikesville Kentucky before moving to Rittman. Survived by wife Mac sons Farley Jerry Dallas Robert Ronald Rodney all at home daughters Edith Sammons Geneva Thompson Phylis Meter four brothers a sister seven grandchildren. Burial in Rittman Cemetery with Rev Lee Hance officiating. Gilman Funeral Home handled arrangements.
Wayne County child welfare director Dorothy Holman told a church audience that Rittman has the worst community problem in the area. She cited dilapidated houses, children left alone, hungry youths, and petty theft linked to lack of supervision.
Township trustees protested to the Interstate Commerce Commission about dangerous crossing conditions on township roads. They also urged a blinker light at County Road 60 and 504 at Amwell near Sterling. A petition signed by 90 Sterling residents cited trains blocking crossings and hindering emergency vehicles. Erie Railroad received a similar protest letter. Blatter warned arrests could follow if the practice continues.
Private services were held Monday for Edward Stehlin 41 of Clayton Denver Colorado husband of Audrey Plahuta of Rittman. He died Wednesday from injuries in a home accident. He had lived in Colorado 20 years. Surviving are wife a son Edward a daughter Margaret Ann his parents Mr and Mrs Edward Stehlin of Karlsruhe Germany and a brother and sister in Germany Gillman Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Police Sergeant Larry Hudson in his first official statement addresses juvenile issues in the south part of Rittman. He confirms prior references by Mrs. Holman and notes two poolroom citations in Wooster court for letting minors on site. Hudson adds police cannot act on the spot if a juvenile has not broken the law and recalls his prior night shift hours.
Rittman High School presents its annual Christmas program Sunday at 3 pm in the auditorium. Five choir groups the high school concert band and Choralettes perform under directors Mrs Donna Jean Bauman and Dennis Antram with solos by Nancy Berkey Gay Gunner Jim Ullman and others.
Sixty four students earned at least two A grades. seniors with all A’s include Bruce Dean Terry Tiplett Bonnie Musser Beverly Shaffer Gay Griner Carolyn Lambert Karen Burk Cheryle Stone Dana Hamilton. Juniors with all A’s are Bruce Holland Judy Walter Diane Pait.
Miss Mary Ethel Cummings will tell Christmas stories at the Ritts Buble Library Saturday December 16 at 1 30 p m for children in grades one through four.
Rittman city council will not hold the regular meeting scheduled for Monday at 7 30 in city hall council chambers due to the Christmas holiday. The normal fourth Monday session is skipped this month.
Construction of the Joint Township Hospital in Rittman is on schedule according to president Blatter. The hospital is slated to open for occupancy in January 1968. The next Taxing Board meeting is set for Wednesday December 20 at 7:30 in the hospital dining room.
