December 2 marks the first Christmas card delivery. Rev. Dean was late to a Thanksgiving service after a truck crash on the Doylestown hill. Dr. Sean of Wooster will read Dickens at the Presbyterian church in Rittman Sunday at 4. Charity drives collect paper. local printers assist regional papers. The Balloon Derby memory returns, and Christmas trees arrive from J. W. Frye Co. Milk prices have risen as of December 1 due to higher raw milk costs.
Boyd Bodager was the lone Indian named to the first team of the Northeastern Buckeye Football League All League selections revealed last week. Kenneth Plahuta Jim Petak and Frank Kitts earned second team berths while Charles Copley and Dick O'Brien received honorable mention. Orrville, the league champion, placed six on the first team and Mansfield four. Selections came from coaches’ nominee lists.
The chamber of commerce lists candidates for nine trustee seats to be chosen at the upcoming banquet on Tuesday December 9 at 6 30 pm at United Brethren church. A nominating committee including Ralph Overholt Harry Brenneman and Charles Rohrer presents a slate headed by Dr E R Alexander and other named trustees. New members join the list alongside existing attendees such as Lewis Hoover John R Wenger and R D Wenger.
A series of birth announcements listed from Wadsworth area families. Names include Dawson, Wirth, Dynko, Vours, Bigler, Lee, Zimmerly, Smith, Hatfield, Watts, Campbell, Gardner with births occurring Nov 20 to Nov 28 at Wadsworth Hospital or related homes. Grandparents named for some entries.
Dr M L Kirchhofer formerly of Seville plans to open dental offices in Rittman next Tuesday. He has purchased the Spade property on S Main St.
Rittman plans Yuletide display next week in the main thoroughfare. The effort is sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, reviving prewar tradition with new lights and wreaths. K W Peace, Osborne, and Austin Gift contributed supplies while Leslie Barrett prepared wreaths. G H Steele oversees installation to decorate the square and S Main Street as possible.
The Schaefer-Wilson Co. owners John Schaefer of W Sunset drive and C E Wilson of Grand view opened a Rittman office in the Schaefer building on the square to handle real estate and insurance. They began in Akron nine years ago and now run a $1.5 million annual loan business with ten salesmen.
Rev Jim Begay of the Navajo described life on an Indian reservation at a Lions Club meeting. He spoke of childhood activities and limited schooling, noting poor school equipment. The Navajo Nation is the largest tribe with extensive reservations. The program plans a Christmas party for Dec 15 and no meeting is scheduled for Dec 29.
The Otterbein Bible class of the Evangelical United Brethren church will meet at the home of Mr and Mrs Russell Steiner in Wadsworth on Tuesday evening December 9. A covered dish supper will be served and there is a $1 gift exchange. Members are asked to bring a 25 cent gift for their own child. Mr and Mrs Ronald Boling will oversee the entertainment.
The village reports its water softening plant is back online after a long wait for materials. Softened water reaches more areas soon, soap use drops by about half, and costs are offset by improved efficiency. The board notes 250000 gallons daily with 25 tons of salt monthly and plans to develop another well.
The Board of Education accepted a anonymous donation of 12 volume set of science encyclopedias from Wadsworth. A letter from Dr D S McDull requests county health services, but funding and nurse shortages prevent expansion. The board approves limited sick leave, considers encyclopedias next year, and authorizes travel to an Ohio Education meeting for Hauenstein. They discuss football field development and a new gas range for the home economics room. Supt Hauenstein reports war surplus items acquired in Cleveland.
The senior class of the high school stages the comedy Miss Jimmy Friday at 8 pm in the auditorium. Ray Lance stars as Jimmy Miller who, during a fraternity initiation, is to steal a dress from a girls college dorm. Caught in the act, he faces danger but the girls plot to hold him for ransom to boost prom attendance.
Scouters of 15 Boy Scout troops in the Chippewa district invite members to an organization meeting in Rittman on Tuesday evening December 9. Hosts are the Rittman troops at the Ohio Boxboard Co conference room with dinner at 6 30 followed by a district reorganization meeting and election of new officers. A J Springer of Wadsworth chairs the meeting and F O Kanehl of Bittish runs arrangements.
A booster club general meeting at the high school on Wednesday evening December 17 will elect new officers and plan for the year. Nominees include President John Baldwin Lawrence Wilmot and Boyd Miller Vice presidents Lewis Hoover O A Houglan and George Sandrock Secretary treasurer Betty Haller and Leonard Over. Attendance urged to keep up the club’s athletic promotions.
