Salvage Clothing Drive For War Relief In Rittman

A coast-to-coast two week drive for discarded and unusable clothing runs through Saturday December 4 in Rittman. The drive operates daily 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the former Sanitary Market space with church women sorting garments by type and ensuring clean pockets and cuffs. RV Fredrick leads the local salvage effort as general chairman.

Army Doubles Draft Call for January 1944

The army has doubled its draft call for January, bringing the combined army navy manpower need for January 1944 to about 290000 men. About 100000 will go to the navy. Officials cite disappointing WAC enlistments and October quota lag as reasons for the increased call. The navy will maintain roughly 100000 as in recent months. The final army figure after January is uncertain, depending on casualties.

Wayne County Dog Tag Sale Opens December First

County Auditor Earl Lautenschlager announces the 6400 dog licenses go on sale December 1 at unchanged prices. About 6400 licenses are sold annually in Wayne County. The auditor will mail notice cards to dog owners with a return card for renewals. Fines may be imposed for dogs over three months without licenses and tags must be worn.

Residents of Sterling plan a series of dances at the K of P hall to provide recreation for youth. The first event is set for Saturday night December 11 with music for round and square dancing. Elderly Rittman Resident Mrs Elva Derthick Dies

Mrs Elva Derthick aged 78 longtime Milton Presbyterian member and Rittman resident for 60 years died Sunday night after a two week illness. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 pm at the church with Rev D B Davidson in charge. Burial took place at Wadsworth cemetery. Ebert Funeral Home assisted. Survivors include one sister Mrs Bert Adams of Rittman and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial Service Sunday For Robert Clippinger

Memorial service in the high school auditorium honored Pvt. Robert F. Clippinger with a church and American Legion ritual. Attendees heard devotional rites as the firing squad led by R. D. Wenger saluted with Taps. A Purple Heart photo tribute finished the service amid fall flowers.
