Dan Beard Awards At Regional Camporal By Scouts

Dan Beard and a group of Scouts from Troop 405 in Covington Ky earned recognition at the Regional Camporal attended by units from Ohio West Virginia and Kentucky. About two thousand Scouts gathered as they demonstrated camp craft and sanitation and were graded on pack camp and cook craft. Dan Beard presented 70 Eagle awards a silver Beaver award and Sea Scout awards after a pageant depicting his life and Covington's early history.

Scout meeting canceled and hike planned at Camp Manatee

There will be no Scout meeting next Monday due to Labor Day. An overnight hike at Camp Manatee is set for September 15 for Scouts who have passed two tests or one merit badge by then. Scouts wishing to attend should see their patrol leader this week. fathers are invited.

Track Trailer Struck By Erie Train No. 6

Erie passenger train number 6 east bound struck a truck driven by H J Richman of Akron en route from Rittman to Cleveland Tuesday evening. The cargo of paper boxes was strewn along Route 94 to the River Styx bridge. Richman watched a yard engine nearby and failed to see blinking signals. The engine hit behind the left wheel, detaching the trailer and wrecking a semaphore signal. Damages to the semaphore estimated near $2500. Richman remained at the tractor wheel and was uninjured.

New Vegetable Store Opens Friday in Rittman

Rittman welcomes a new vegetable store opening Friday August 31 owned by Elleen Newcomer and Paul Emch of Central Market. The shop will offer a full line of fresh vegetables and fruit and is located on Main Street in the former New Deal restaurant. A dew spray system preserves vegetables. The proprietors live two miles north on a 40 acre truck farm.

Ohio Population Ranks Fourth As State Numbers Grow

U S Bureau of Census places Ohio fourth in population at 6,836,000, behind New York, Pennsylvania, and Illinois. Ohio Highway Department reports about 4,000 county and city road accidents in the first half of 1934, with 291 deaths and 2,923 injuries. Census retail study notes 1933-34 gains in Ohio retail employment and stores, despite lower sales versus 1929. Education department forecasts fall public school enrollment

The Department of Education estimates about 1,300,000 students will attend public schools this fall, down from 1,306,655 last year due to funding shortages in rural areas. Separately, seasonal demand and higher commerce will boost Ohio mine employment in September, with mines operating two to three days weekly and producers ready to ramp up to meet demand, says James E Berry.

Trade Board Hears Judge Mougey Address At Banquet

The Rittman Trade Board held a meeting after a banquet where Judge Mougey of the Court of Common Pleas spoke on understanding tasks tied to the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District. The board announced a plan to invite an engineer to answer questions if Rutman residents pursue an opera meeting before September and approved a $175 payment to the Rittman Band. A grand prize drawing was set for October 6 under the Merchant's Participation Plan with $200 reserved, cash or merchandise to be decided later.

Friends and parishioners of Reverend Paul Bauman and his bride hosted a reception at the Moline home on Wednesday night with about 126 attendees.
