Mayor Ritter acquires a two faced aluminum owl with glittering eyes claimed to deter starlings. He notes success elsewhere and offers to share the device with others bothered by the birds. Also reports Monday's Coney Island crowd estimate at 1.5 million in three layers.
Vacation notes describe a Peterboro visit to a Akron Soap Box Derby screening and a two week stay in Hessel Michigan. The piece mentions Linoleum patterns, Chippewa Salt, blueberry picking, local residents, prices and travel by ferry across the Straits of Mackinac, plus Labor Day plans and a Kennedy party in Marshallville with twenty guests from Rittman and Marshallville.
The Ohio Boxboard Company invites the public to a 7 p.m. Labor Day Family Night at the Boxboard athletic field with guests from Boggs's Village and Wayne County Orphans Home. Admission is free. gates open at 7 with no parking on Senecast between Ohio Ave and Grant St. Employees receive service pins from five to 40 years, with many honored by company leaders.
Cy Young legendary pitcher will be guest of honor and honorary umpire at a double header at Wadsworth ball park on Sunday August 31. The Wadsworth Orphans meet the Akron Yanks in the opener starting at 1 30.
A sequence of birth notices from Orrville Waposter and surrounding towns lists several newborns at Massillon City Hospital Beeson Hospital and Wadsworth Hospital. Names include Phillip Ester Ronald Eugene Kenneth Melvin Byron Jean and others with dates August 17 18 20 23 26.
Raymond and Russell Bell sold their square food store to Joe Wald who will take over management on September 2. The Wald Market will continue existing policies. Wald previously owned Rittman Dairy and has worked with W. R. Shook Lumber Co. for the past year.
The Misses Eleanor and Betty Irven of Burbank spent the weekend with Mrs. J. E. Benek and family.
Rittman youths George Thomas Jr. and Arvil L. White died at the scene when their car collided with an Erie freight train at county line road just after 3 AM. Injured were John Chisholm and Mrs Ruby Perry Hawkins. Thomas served in Korea and left a family. White's body was sent to West Virginia for burial as authorities investigated the wreck.
The price of milk in Rittman will rise two cents per quart on all grades starting September 1, announced by the Rittman Pleasant View Dairy and Smith's Dairy.
The council approved an ordinance Monday night to impose a special assessment for sidewalk construction across several town sections. A resolution ordered notices to affected property owners about the assessment. The street department was told to spread dust control material on Sunset Drive where sewers were installed.
A party of men from Rittman and Wadsworth ran out of gas on Lake Erie near Put-in-Bay as dusk fell with a coming storm. After about an hour a passing boat towed them to Put-in-Bay to refuel. They later reached Sandusky several hours late. Passengers from Rittman included Howard Smith Nik Prentovich and Paul Cauhta.
