In a bike contest Doug Hammond and Danny Loving led the field as Don won fastest bike in the regular division and Dan took the English racers trophy. Races ran from East Ohio to East Sunset via Industrial Street with a final uphill leg.
Patrolman Jim Higgins announced his resignation this week to enter the trucking business with his brother in Marietta Ohio. He thanked the department and Chief Heffelman for the opportunity to serve and stated the move is to better himself. City Manager Laughlin said a Civil Service exam will be requested to fill the vacancy.
City crews will seal coat asphalt streets in Rittman today if weather allows. This marks the first time the city performs the work, expected to cut costs by about 40 percent versus outside contractors. Streets include North Main, West Sunset, Salt Street area, part of Grandview, and related alleys. a one day detour is planned.
Thomas Spear 94 Pinewood appointed principal of Rittman High School to replace Dr. John Heter. A former principal of North and First Streets Schools, Spear brings nine years in junior high education and roles in social studies, physical education, and driver training. He holds an Ohio provisional certificate and degrees from Taylor University and Michigan State. he is pursuing a doctorate at Akron. His wife Shirley teaches in the system. they have two daughters and attend Rittman Evangelical United Brethren Church.
West Hill prepares for football with Coach Pyle ordering all players to report for physicals on August 17, 1966 at 11 am in the high school gym.
The First Meeting of the Rittman Educational Study Committee with the Board of Education will be held at West Hill School on Thursday at 7 30 p m The session is open to the press but not the public Board chairman Ed Taylor said public meetings would come later He noted the panel is not the school bond publicity committee though one may form from its 25 members Four new teachers were hired for 1966 67 Maxine Duvall Neva Foster Mary Menegay and Jeanette Woyat
Two Rittman groups volunteer to tutor underprivileged Akron children through the ASTP program sponsored by Akron University and local centers. Volunteers include Julia Harris and Mary Holt guiding through Monday and Tuesday sessions at multiple centers to provide tutoring and mentorship.
The Wayne County Bookmobile will make its last summer trip the week of August 21. All books and fines should be settled at this time. Thursday stops include Burbank at 3:30 p.m. and Sterling at 6:30 p.m.
Edmund J. Berger 66 longtime Rittman resident died Friday afternoon at his home 57 South State Street after retiring from Packaging Corporation of America in 1961 due to ill health. He was born February 13, 1900 in Stanford Kentucky. Survivors include wife Marie two sons Wayne Akron and Kenneth Miami Florida a daughter Donna Dannemiller Bath Ohio a brother Victor Mishawaka Indiana two sisters Martha Wagner and Matilda Von Gruenigen both Wakarusa Indiana and seven grandchildren. Funeral services Monday at Evangelical United Brethren Church with Rev F D Donaldson officiating burial followed at Rittman Cemetery. Gillman Funeral Home handled arrangements.
Wayne County Board of Elections confirms nine candidates entered petitions for city council positions. Names include Joseph P. Angelo, Delone E. Bowman, Edwin J. Brophy, Jay Griffith, Harry K. Griner, Clarence C. Kunkler, Clyde E. Moore, Edward R. Ramsier, and Kenneth L. Robbins.
Thirty five college students will visit Rittman Wednesday to study a modern well organized small city government. The visit, in its second year, is under the Internship program in Local Government and sponsored by the American Society of Public Administration. City Manager Will Laughlin will speak after a dinner at 8 p.m. They previously visited Columbus.
The notice outlines a weekly band schedule with freshmen reporting to the band room at 9 a.m. on Monday and Tuesday, and all band members at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Instrument pickup for students needing school instruments occurs Thursday or Friday, August 18 and 19, from 1 to 4 p.m. Uniforms will be distributed to sophomores through seniors on Monday, August 22 from 1 to 5 p.m., with freshmen receiving theirs on Tuesday from 1 to 5 p.m.

Citations include driving while intoxicated and traffic light violations with small fines, suspensions, and court costs.
