The Rittman Board of Education sets Tuesday August 19 for a special meeting to decide the school opening date. If polio cases are not under control, the district will remain closed until safety is assured.

Neighbors Paint House for Ill Trucker in Spare Time

Nine neighbors painted the house of Dallas Welling at 106 N Third St while he recovered from a serious heart attack at Wadsworth Hospital. Welling, a former Ohio Boxboard Co trucker, had scraped loose paint and had supplies brought to his basement garage. Neighbors began the spontaneous effort after word spread from his physician that he would be off work for months.

Chambers Oppose Ohio Central Telephone Rate Increase

The Rittman Chamber of Commerce organized opposition to a proposed rate rise by the Ohio Central Telephone Company. A Tuesday letter from Chamber secretary Robert E. Bodager to the Public Utilities Commission filed the group's formal record against the increase.

Union Accepts Morton Salt Contract With Wage Hike

Local Union No. 12081 United Mine Workers of America voted 3 to 1 to approve Morton Salt Company contract for 1952 53. The pact provides a 5 cent per hour wage increase retroactive to July 1 a 8 cent shift differential for third shift and an increase in call in and reporting time from three to four hours all pending Wage Stabilization Board approval.

Postponed American Legion Auxiliary Steak Roast

The steak roast scheduled by the American Legion Auxiliary for August 25 has been postponed indefinitely. The first meeting will be held September 8. Mr and Mrs Porter Melvin were luncheon guests Sunday of Mr and Mrs Ralph Holsberg.

Rittman Football Opens Equipment, Exams Next Wednesday

Coach Ashton O Hall announced football uniforms and physicals for Rittman players will begin at 9 a m next Wednesday August 20. Practice session announcements depend on the Board of Education decision on opening public schools. Other ticket methods were reviewed at Monday night’s meeting.

Quarantine Rules Enacted Over Poliomyelitis Outbreak

Dr Earl Klein Klein, county health commissioner announces quarantine measures under Ohio Public Health Council regulations for Rittman village. Under 7 day exposure based rules, children under 15 and adult household contacts must isolate or refrain from public gatherings and food work. Violations carry penalties under Ohio law.

Awards Contract To D-town Firm

The council awarded the sewerage plant and trunk lines contract to Goffinet Construction Co for 97 700 after engineer Barstow recommended the bid. The meeting also discussed phone rate objections, a pending stipulation for Ohio Central Telephone Co, and a fine against another western Ohio line. A night policeman position was created and applications are being received. Mayor Hoover will review candidates. Action on Metzger Ave opening to Sterling Ave was postponed for further study.

Six Rittman men in fatal bus collision tragedy

A fishing trip for six Rittman men was canceled Saturday evening after Jo Ann Earnest aged 16 of Loyal Oak was fatally injured alighting from a bus in a heavy rain on Route 261 near Route 21. The car occupants Emil Firis Dick Baker Don Beery Bob McCammon and John Maslak were involved. Ditch was not held.
