At a PTA auction a woman known for auctionitis buys a rare treadle Singer Sewing Machine for $2. Her husband jokes about selling her next time. The piece joins a catalog of local notes including hospital recovery, booster drives, dance of birthdays and anniversaries, and moving updates.
Rural residents vote on a zoning ordinance May 4 with all townships except Chippewa Two voting separately. The zoning plan defines districts, building uses, heights, and areas to promote health safety morals and welfare. The Ohio Farm Bureau supports rural zoning and the National Grange urged USDA zoning research in 1958. Wayne County population rose from 58,700 in 1950 to 87,000 in 1970, underscoring need for zoning.

The Chamber of Commerce announces a May clean-up drive starting Saturday May 1 with a litter derby between Rotary and Lions Clubs. A trophy will go to the club collecting the most litter in the PCA entrance to Rt 57 area. Co chairs are Rev James Watt and Thomas Sparks. Readied crews include Brownie troop, girl scouts, boy scouts, Delta Club, Junior Mother's Club, and other civic groups. The effort runs through May with broad participation urged.
Ohio Edison Company filed with the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio to raise rates for residential and small commercial service in its non-ordinance area by about 7.75 million dollars. The company cites a large construction program, higher taxes, and rising costs as reasons, estimating residential bills would rise by 6 to 8 cents daily.
At a board meeting Ralph Overholt became Chairman of the Board and Allan J. Broadhurst was elevated to President. Former President Overholt and EVP Broadhurst were lauded as the bank restructures its leadership. Harry Brenneman retires from the board and becomes director emeritus. Neva Higgins promoted to Assistant Vice-President and Assistant Secretary. Richard Lukovski and Harry Blake Jr. named assistant cashiers with duties in the Special Plan Loan Department and North Main Street Branch. Other officers include C. E. Rhonemus, Tom Sparks, and Tom Gwaltney.
Joan Hessidence and Brian Bodager represented Rittman High School at the Eighteenth Annual Ohio Association of Student Councils Conference held April 22 to 24 at Chillicothe High School. Nearly 700 delegates attended. The event offered leadership workshops, discussions on student council issues, and a banquet and dance.
A Firemen’s Carnival Parade beauty contest crowns a single 15 to 19 year old Rittman resident as winner, awarding a $50 savings bond, 12 roses, and a trophy. Votes cost 5 cents, with runners-up receiving $25 bonds and roses. Sponsors pay $1000 entry to fund the fire department equipment fund.
The sixth annual art show in Rittman closed Sunday with a record attendance of 259 for the day and total four day attendance of 511, though below last year’s 663. Prizes were awarded for scenes in the Rittman rural route area with Olive Brookover winning best of show for Old World and Steve Radonich Jr. earning second best for New England Calm. High school entries totaled 203 with 59 artists exhibiting. Organizers plan a May meeting to discuss future shows and a possible one day sidewalk event.
