Arbor Day Planting At West Hill School

Principal Miriam Roth led West Hill School pupils in planting a flowering crab tree to celebrate Arbor Day. The ceremony featured student participation and a poem reading about the tree as a source of warmth, shade, sustenance, and material usefulness. Other items note visits from Mrs. Grady Ingle and Dr. Frederick Ingle, church society meetings scheduled for May 2, and local residents moving or visiting.

Rittman High Band Calendar Drive This Week

Rittman High School band members will tour town next week for a band calendar drive. Band Parents drivers assist as students seek orders nightly from Monday 6 30 to 8 30 pm. Proceeds fund instruments uniforms and related band needs.

Republican Women Delegate Headed to Washington Conference

Mrs George Hileman Mrs Larry Wertz and Mrs Lindsey Williams lead Wayne County GOP women including chairman Mrs Leo Kindswatter for the 11th annual spring conference in Washington D C. The April 25 27 meeting will include 145 Ohioans from 34 counties and Ohio headquarters Suite at the Sheraton Park Hotel. The delegation plans to return Sunday morning.

City Moves To Crack Down On Tavern Noise After 11 P.M.

City Manager Charles Mann orders Police Chief to act decisively against noise disturbances in taverns and cafes after 11 pm under Ordinance Section 53.6. Violators face fines up to 50 dollars. In council session, Calabria challenged the mayor over enforcement and the term Little Chicago was invoked. Council discussed bands, amusement taxes, and other town ordinances.

American Way Becomes Easy For Feiko After Seven Years

A Japanese mother Teiko Yamazaki Beichler and her American husband Carl Beichler reflect on their seven year marriage after meeting at Kamisaya Naval Base. She adapted to rural life west of Rittman and contrasts Japanese and American customs especially transportation and family life while praising equality for women in the United States. Their son Gary, nearly five, is quiet and affectionate as Teiko notes differences in childrearing between Japan and America.

Grace Lewis 70 Buried After Long Illness

Grace Doris Lewis 70 of Doylestown died after a long illness at Sarah Lee Rest Home. A former Cleveland resident and retired bookkeeper, she was active with Calvary Presbyterian Church. Services were held at First Presbyterian Church St Clairsville with burial in Union Cemetery St Clairsville. Rev Richard Ferguson officiated. No relatives survive except cousins.

Mrs Clifton New Friends of Library President

Mrs John Clifton was elected president of the Friends of the Library at Thursday’s meeting, succeeding Carl Bradford who began last spring. Reelected were Katherine Twinem as treasurer and Mary Ethel Cummings as secretary. The group discussed resurfacing the rear parking area and adding a cement walk to the rear entrance, with Wayne County Librarian Katharine Schantz of Wooster in attendance.

Taylor Is New Board Member Ed Taylor Appointed

Ed Taylor named to fill vacant Rittman Board of Education seat replacing Homer Castor. Taylor, 33, a longtime local activity leader and former Rittman PTA president, will serve two years and was sworn in by Clerk Margaret Williams. He lives at 82 Orchard Street with wife Sally and children Gail Scott Gary.

Minstrel show nets for PTA and school levy vote

The ninth annual PTA Minstrel Show last month netted 78753.82 after expenses. At a PTA meeting at West Hill School, attendees endorsed a 20 mill school bond levy to appear on the May ballot. School board members, the superintendent, and officers toured fundraising use of funds and lighting improvements financed by the PTA.

Raupach Death in Three Car Route 94 Crash

Services held Tuesday in Doylestown for Gary Raupach 21 son of Mr and Mrs Lee Raupach of Doylestown. Involved in crash were Mary Jane House and Judy King both of Rittman. Jeffery J Linder Janes Lacy and Howard Miller Jr all of Orrville. Miller driver of second car and Linder of third owned by Dever Lacy. No injuries to them. Raupach car ran off highway struck two utility poles. driver thrown, died on arrival at Dunlap Hospital. Also named William Bowen 61 of Rittman who died Wednesday at Orrville Osteopathic Hospital. Burial in Rittman Cemetery. Father died later.

Brandes Buys New York Paper in Newark Valley switch

Leon Brandes of Rittman has purchased the Tioga County Herald a weekly newspaper in Newark Valley New York. He leaves Sunday to assume operation of the paper. Brandes, a Rochester Tech graduate in printing, comes from Packag ag Corporation of America. His family Pamela 7 Steve 5 Beth 3 will move from 305 North Street to Brandes hometown next month.

Wayne County Spelling Bee crowns Virginia Yount

In Wooster Parkview School's spelling event the champion was Virginia Yount of Orrville North who correctly spelled spinet to win the Wayne County Bee. Contenders included Gay Griner from First Street School and Melanie Pratt from West Hill with several contestants stumbling on tricky terms like dimension and feign. Karen McComas, last year’s Wayne District winner, previously advanced to the National Bee in Washington.

Flower Show Set By Buckeye Garden Club

A two day Buckeye Garden Club flower show at Rittman Public Library May 3 and 4 features prizes ribbons and judging by Mrs Myrtle Beck of Seville. First second and third place ribbons will be awarded plus a poster prize for fifth graders. Show hours are 3 to 3 30 pm Friday and 1 to 9 pm Saturday.

Daylight Saving Time Ends and Clocks Fall Back

Authorities announce the time change to standard time at 2 a.m. Sunday. The extra hour of sleep from last Saturday is regained in September, and neighboring communities will also switch to standard time.
