A B. and O. box car was broken into on Thursday and groceries and other articles were stolen. The culprits were seen and recognized by A. G. Pierce and Alphus Goffinet, but they escaped before officers could be summoned. They had been in town only a short time.

Assaultcharge in Sterling leads to jail and fines
John Joseph of Canton was jailed Thursday night on a complaint from Constable Johnson of Sterling. He faced a Friday morning trial for assault and battery on Mrs. Clementine Rheine of Sterling, with L. J. Gigandet as interpreter and Mrs. Wald and Mrs. Vetter as witnesses. Mayor Hanes convicted him and fined 10 dollars plus costs, plus 1 dollar and costs for a separate peddling without a license charge in Rittman.
