Judge Cline denied the motion of Gaston B Mans to compel Assistant District Attorney John T Dooling of New York to surrender to Cabarrus county Superior Court officers certain papers seized in Means apartments in New York. Coal barons face prison sentences for defying the law. The German military machine shows weakening over the past month due to allied pounding.
The biggest pumpkin in years sits on display raised by J A Langley of Greensboro Route 3. The King of Mammoth seed, bought from Scott Seed Company last spring, produced a fruit weighing 104 pounds and as large around as a barrel.
Sheriff D B Stafford with Deputies Joe Phipps J A Hobbs and M D Caffey seized a 35 gallon copper still and 40 feet of worm in Sumner township near Asheboro. They destroyed 300 gallons of beer and returned four gallons of singlings 18 empty gallon jugs and two coats belonging to the owners.
Active arrangements are being made to put in final shape the short course in agriculture for farmers that are to start on Oct. 30 at the State College, Raleigh, and continue for 16 weeks.
A rumor spread Thursday afternoon that a large stick of dynamite was planted near the Governor’s Raleigh office. Adjutant General Young reportedly gave Secretary Martin a fuse as a souvenir, suggesting further inquiry into the alleged find. Previous police scares noted 32 sticks of explosives found near a viaduct with the dynamite traced to a stolen Southern Railway freight car.
President J Elwood Cox of the National Bank Section of the American Bankers Association and the Commercial National Bank of this city vows to buy 100000 of the Liberty Loan. He says bankers nationwide back the government and will push the entire issue. Cox plans a major drive for the second Liberty bond issue as banks close Thursday for the Greensboro fair.
Belvin Harmon’s Henryford was taken Sunday night from in front of Wesley Memorial M E church and later found near Greensboro dismantled with parts missing. The car could not start and was left in a badly damaged state, its owner puzzled by who stole and robbed the vehicle.
The Athletic Association of the High School met last week and elected officers. Presidents include Lewis Teague and vice president Howard Albertson. Secretaries are Jas Lyon and Arthur Kirkman, with Guy Byerly as treasurer. Team officials list captains and managers for basketball, baseball, and track.
The editor and family attended the funeral Sunday afternoon for Flora Norwood wife of J C Norwood of Thomasville who died Friday night at her home. Survived by husband three sisters and three brothers. She was about 60 and died after cancer believed caused by an old accident. Ministers Rev J A Goode and Rev Sanford conducted the service at Mt Pleasant and burial was in Mt Pleasant burying ground. The crowd was large, floral offerings pretty, and Norwood was widely liked for her Christian work and cheerfulness.

Mrs Flora B Johnson and Hugh Bratcher both of High Point were married in the register of deeds office at the courthouse Saturday afternoon. The ceremony was performed by Rev C E Hodgin pastor of Westminster Presbyterian church.
D. E. Hammer named principal at Oak Hill school which opened Monday with good enrollment. Springfield and Highland cotton mills school also started Monday with encouraging enrollments and solid attendance.
The city council on Saturday placed an order for an American LaFrance triple 750-gallon pump to replace the disabled Seagraves truck in service at the Southside station. The new vehicle costs 9750 dollars and will be delivered within 60 days. A small sum under 1000 dollars was approved for the old Seagraves truck.

Doctors Guy F Duncan and W L Jackson have leased the O N Richardson building at the corner of E Washington and Steele to convert it into a modern hospital. The location is ideal and the two gentlemen are highly regarded, expected to make a fine success.
Part of the Z. A. Burns estate was disposed of at auction here Monday by the Penny Bros. A large crowd was present and bidding was lively. The 100 front feet on North Main sold in four lots for about 8500 while four lots on back facing Jordan street brought about 2000. The Hamilton street area sold for around 24000. Sales ran from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the event was noted as one of the most successful sales here. Buyers included T. F. Wrenn, D. A. Stanton, W. L. Stamey, O. A. Kirkman, C. E. Reitzel, S. S. Coe, E. K. Ingram, A. L. Burns, Wm. Tate, W. P. Pickett, C. L. Leonard, and E. T. Harmon.
J A Rountree, secretary for the Bankhead National Highway Association, completed a two week automobile tour with committees from towns between Atlanta and Washington. He covered 1460 miles, spoke in 48 towns, and planned the official pathfinding party to start from Washington on October 30 to designate the Bankhead Highway routes both East and West with stops and banquets along the way.
S. W. Kivett, formerly of Randolph county and now in Sampson county, signs a large contract to cut two million feet of fine long leaf pine for Woodlen Lumber Co. of Philadelphia. The timber will be shipped to Delaware and other northern points for shipbuilding. Kivett has recently opened a large mill and is ready to work.

The fair will admit white school children free on Friday October 12 but each child must have a ticket. Tickets are available from the city superintendent’s office if in the city, or from the county superintendent if in the county.

County commissioners debated appointing a county superintendent of charities and public welfare to oversee the poor, parolees, dependent and delinquent children, hospitals dischargees, and welfare programs. They cited rising costs, including a $900 winter clothing bill for convicts, and outlined duties under state supervision and local enforcement.
Guilford county will form a home guard of 100 men aged 31 to 45. They will not be drafted or strictly volunteers and will be chosen by the local board of defense led by chairman C. M. Vanstory. Fifty come from Greensboro, twenty five from the county, and twenty five from High Point. County residents may send their names to Mr. Vanstory to be considered.
The Woman's Club held its annual meeting at the Elks Home last week. The session reviewed the past year's work and noted considerable progress while the outlook for the future appeared brighter.
