Washington reports William Gibbs McAdoo may enter the Democratic race for president. Capital sources say conservatives back a McAdoo candidacy, with labor and farmer support. he delays entry amid Wilson third-term talk as peace treaty moves progress.
The Barnes Manufacturing company bought the Alma Furniture Company from J. H. Petty and others for about 50,000 dollars. Alma is among High Point's oldest plants and likely will focus on dining room furniture manufacturing. A separate editorial critiques lenient whiskey fines, urging penalties from 1,500 to 2,500 dollars to curb bootlegger activity.
A temporary embargo on freight at High Point caused alarm as empty cars were sent to Atlanta and the warehouse overflowed. The backlog tied up orders until congestion eased. the next day conditions improved and freight movement resumed.
Wm C Massey former secretary of the High Point Chamber of Commerce resigned recently to pursue publicity work in Tennessee. President J J Farriss accepted the resignation and Massey cited leaving under satisfactory conditions and plans for a broader field. He and Mrs Massey departed Friday for Tennessee after several months of service that aided local enterprise.
The Gilmer Produce Company secured one million pounds of sugar for its stores to ease the sugar shortage. The High Point store will receive its portion and the sugar will be sold at cost to customers and housewives.
The city council discussed sewer improvements in the fourth ward along Walnut and Commerce streets and ordered paving of Centennial and lower Washington streets. A juvenile court was established with W. M. Marr as first judge and several requests for sewerage and water were referred for investigation. Cemetery lot prices were raised to align with current values. Mrs Fred L Montgomery died at a local hospital after a short illness. husband and two infant daughters survived. Funeral services were held from the Dewey street home conducted by Rev. W. A. Lambeth assisted by Rev. P. D. Brown.
Sanford mourns Rev. James Archibald Davis a gifted young preacher who died in an automobile accident in Fort Worth Texas. Davis recently left Sanford for Southwestern Theological Seminary after earlier studies at Mars Hill and Wake Forest where he preached at Pullen Memorial church. His body expected home to Manners between Sanford and Lillington.
City officials led by Mayor D A Stanton and Chamber of Commerce president J J Farriss urged the U S Railroad Administration for help with a passenger station problem in High Point. Southbound trains discharging on the right side create danger and hardship for travelers, especially in bad weather, as pedestrians must navigate mud and cross ties to Main street and station entries. Business visitors from large cities report the unsafe conditions.
Walter L Main presents a refined three act show featuring elephants Dottie Snyder and horses along with aerial acts and clowns. The program includes twenty seven high class acts with strong crowd appeal and evening performances touted as full and refined.
Several young women hosted festive Hallowe en gatherings on Friday night and Saturday evening. Miss Billie Hiatt Miss Ida Mungan Miss Dennyce and Iva McAdams Miss Shelby Clodfelter and the McAdams sisters entertained friends at homes and on Centennial avenue with playful costumes and social revelry.
Sheriff D B Stafford arrested a young white man named Stiles after residents complained he demanded five minutes on the Guilford College Friends Church program. Stiles rode a horse from W N Mebane’s Irving Park stable and was jailed. relatives in Richmond, Va, were to be sought. He had recently arrived in Greensboro and was said to be not fully in possession of his faculties.
Julius C. Smith formerly of High Point joins A Wayland Cooke to form the new law firm Cooke and Smith. The junior partner will be the active member while Cooke provides advisory help. Smith recently married Miss Keith of Wilmington and they reside with Mrs. T. A. Hunter on North Elm Street.
Messrs Guy King and H J Lewis of Atlanta contemplate erecting a daily wooden toys plant in High Point. The Woodcraft Company runs the existing main plant in Atlanta and may relocate here soon. The community welcomes Rev W A Lambeth back to Wesley Memorial and bids farewell to Rev H H Robbins as he moves to Murphy with Rev Mr Williams succeeding him.
In Recorder's Court on Monday Charlie Curtis, colored, guilty on two counts theft of a bicycle and carrying a pistol and six months extra for larceny. Appeals bonds set at 500 and 200. Rob ert and George Hubbard found guilty of assault, fined 10 each. Jude Hoskins guilty of drunkenness twice, pays 5 plus costs. Mood Harvey fined 5 for similar offense. Walter Ben acquitted of assaulting his wife, case dropped against him for assault on Albert Harrison. C A Misenheimer pleads guilty to speeding. Kennedy and Moffitt vagrancy and trespassing continued to Friday.

Rev Gypsy Smith Jr led a Greensboro revival with High Pointers attending, and Red Cross drive asks one dollar contributions. Henry L. Sherwood to marry Elizabeth Candler in Savannah, Ga, while Lotton English seeks pardon for a seven year old killing. National Lock Co plans a new factory and Hallowe en festivities draw crowds as three men face vagrancy fines.
O W Woosley lauds Rev J M Williams who succeeds Rev H H Robbins as pastor of Main Street Methodist church in Statesville. He recalls Williams four year leadership at Race Street, noting clean church grounds, intimate member knowledge, a $2500 church renovation and 68 baptisms.
The W P Pickett estate is valued at 100000 dollars. Tonight about fifty members of the Chamber of Commerce of this city will attend a banquet with the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce at the O Henry hotel.
Contractors start work this week on the Dyer building replacing the old Jarrel hotel. The two story structure will be expandable to four or five. First floor to house a drug store two other stores and a cafeteria. Second floor reserved for offices. Also reported, S Luther Hines and Ada Oldenhall wed Saturday afternoon by Justice J B Minor in G S Bradshaw's office with few witnesses. They will reside in High Point after the Greensboro trip.
Josiah Small prominent Randolph County farmer dies at local hospital after a brief illness. He was 75 years old. Remains taken home near Fullers. funeral at Mount Tarbor church Monday at 11. He is father of J. F. Small of Thomasville. News from Old Trinity notes several local visits illnesses and moves including Bettie Marsh and Laura Royals.
