Honor ed citizen William P Pickett buried in High Point

William P Pickett a longtime High Point resident and influential citizen died in a Baltimore hospital from heart disease after traveling there for medical consultation. He served as city councilman and mayor, owned stakes in several enterprises, and was active in banks and local businesses. Funeral services were held at Main Street M P church with many officials in attendance. Born January 1 1847 in Davidson County he moved to High Point as a young man and left behind a widow two brothers two sisters several children and two sons who went to Baltimore to arrange his remains.

Four Businesses Targeted in Heavy Early Morning Robbery

A major, planed robbery spree occurred in the business district early Thursday between 2 and 4 am under bright streetlights. Lilin's store window was smashed with watches taken about $150, Ring Drug Co. lost cash, Home Banking Co. entered, Steam Laundry affected, and attempts on High Point Hardware and W C Beavans. No arrests yet, several suspects questioned.

A house owned by John Kelly east of Mechanicsville Main Street burned early Thursday, lighting the town for several minutes. Firefighters arrived promptly but water supply stretched 2000 feet of hose before any water reached the blaze. origin undetermined.

Coal Strike Looms Despite Wilson Proclamation

The coal miners plan a strike Saturday regardless of the President’s proclamation. The move could aid cheaper coal under government management. In a local affray case Judge Kirkman fined Celia Samet and A Bernard ten dollars plus costs. Samet appealed with bond set at one hundred dollars. Boss Cain and Rastus Jessup were fined ten dollars for drunkenness but released on related drunk driving charges. Paul Payne was found guilty of drunkenness and disorderly conduct, fined ten dollars with bond of one hundred dollars. News from Old Trinity notes visits by Mrs Roe Woodard and Miss Moore, with Woodard formerly Miss Roe Robbins, plus other local movements and residents including Miss Ruth Hayes at Due West College.

Prominent Farmer Idol Dies After Stroke at 58

June J. Idol a well known farmer living six miles from the city died shortly before midnight Friday after a stroke. He was a prosperous local grower of peaches and strawberries, involved in trucking and farming. He leaves a widow and 13 children. funeral at Abbotts Creek church following a large crowd.

National Auto Theft Law Passed by Senate

The national automobile theft law, long urged by North Carolina residents, was approved by the Senate. It imposes up to a $5000 fine and five years imprisonment for transporting stolen vehicles in interstate commerce and for receiving or disposing of such vehicles. Also notes churches heavily use newspaper ads to promote Sunday sermons especially in Washington. Church ads fill space, reflecting strong religious activity among war workers and residents.

Automobile Turnover Near Will Moore Place Injures Drunks

Chief Welch and assistants responded Saturday night to a single vehicle wreck on the Winston road near the Will Moore place where a car carrying several intoxicated men turned over on a steep embankment. One man suffered four broken ribs. others had minor bruises.

A large gathering of NC chair manufacturers convened at the Commercial Club on Friday to discuss factory conditions and production levels. The session was called to order by T. J. Ryan of this city, with W. H. Coye, chair statistician for the Southern district, in attendance at High Point. The meeting did not address chair pricing.

City Moves to Pave Centennial and Washington Streets

City council on Tuesday acted to pave Centennial avenue and urged Washington street owners from the Centennial avenue corner to the railroad east to sign for paving. City manager coordinates with the paving company and expects completion before winter.
