All males between 21 and 31 must register on June 5 under penalty of imprisonment for one year for noncompliance. The notice calls for universal registration regardless of race health or location to avoid legal penalties.
Citizens urged to attend an auditorium rally this evening led by General Young Colonel Gardner and majors Howell and Brown. Music by Springfield Land. Attendees will learn how to register and what the war means, with emphasis on draft ages.
A Tuesday morning blaze leveled the residence of J. Ed. Allen near the Carolina and Yadkin River Railway depot. Firemen arrived after the fire had gained headway and focused on protecting nearby property. The house was partly insured.
The War Department outlines how a civilian becomes a drafted man. After June 5 he registers in his precinct and waits several weeks for exemption or classification. If required he reports to a local armory, receives equipment, and is transported to a concentration camp. If denied exemption he may appeal in a federal court.
At a Monday meeting of High Point Lodge No 39 K of P members decided to ask the Grand Lodge to hold its next gathering in High Point. Last year no effort was made though High Point received the second highest vote.

The issue highlights a June 5 registration card to be filled out, rules for registration, facts about the draft act, and the governor’s call for volunteers. It notes mobilizing labor, a storm disaster with 250 deaths, Boy Scout and local feature columns, and town relief efforts with illustrations.
Misa Josephine English daughter of W. J. English of this city died Tuesday morning at Black in after an illness from pulmonary trouble. The remains arrived yesterday and will be interred today. Surviving are her father two sisters Mrs C A Ring of High Point and Miss Clara English of Atlanta and W H English of High Point. The young woman was well and favorably known.
Registrars for selective service were sworn in by Clerk of Court Mason W. Gant. Registration sites in High Point wards are listed with ward officers. All residents must register and show duplicate cards if questioned by law officers.
Friday night the city council met for a brief session. Thomas J. Murphy was sworn in as city manager by Mayor W P Ragan and began his duties. Murphy urged council and citizens to cooperate as investors in the city’s affairs. L Gidney was elected water and lights superintendent over W C York. The tax collector salary was raised back to 75 dollars, with R C Soyars taking the post. Superintendent W M Marr filed partial recommendations on teachers and other items for the next board action. The council approved quarterly meetings at the superintendent’s office to discuss school matters.

Doctors J. T. Butrus and W. J. McAnally, leaders at High Point area hospitals, report for duty with the hospital corps. Major Bur tus may be sent to France soon, leaving large local practices as they head to Fort Oglethorpe tonight.
The council fixed Manager Murphy’s bond at 10000 and Collector Sayars at 5000. It approved salary boosts for teachers, raising general pay by 1400 for the year and Gustafson’s manual training pay from 800 to 900 for eight months. A $50000 borrowing plan to cover bills and fund the general fund was approved.
Miss Ruth McAnalis in training at High Point hospital spent Sunday in Trinity. Mrs. Eva Hellman Bivins of Albemarle with her children Billy and Emma Carr visited Mrs. D.C. Johnson at Sunnyside in South Trinity. Miss Sadie Feddick spent last week in Thomasville visiting relatives. Mrs. Martha Peace of High Point visits her parents on North Main. Buck Weeks of Winston-Salem spent part of the week with his mother at the hotel.

The advertisement proclaims cheap white dry goods in old prices with items like white petticoats and nightgowns at 35c and other staples at 10c 15c and 25c per yard. H A Moffitt invites readers to call for desired items and promises wide selection at low prices.
It is the duty of every citizen to assist in getting out a full registration. On Army Day June 5 the President's rules demand that within five days after registration is complete lists shall be made out and posted in conspicuous places as well as printed. Anyone who knows of a citizen who is evading the law and does not report him is as guilty as the evader.
Local residents including Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Goodman, Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Motes, and many Guyer family members are highlighted in a sequence of visits moves and social events. Attendees heard addresses by Dr. Sylvester Newlin and Mayor W. P. of High Point while choir performances drew praise. Crews announce a public event at Mechanicsville school auditorium on Thursday night May 31.
