Knoxville Tennessee May 5 The Southern Commercial Secretaries association wraps its convention with officers elected Miss Bessie Hackney of High Point North Carolina named a vice president W R Timmons of Rock Hill South Carolina F Roger Miller Morristown Tennessee and W A Cox of Norfolk Virginia also named vice presidents. The note adds a wedding report and revival updates from the South Main Street M E church with Rev Kirkpatrick and Pastor Robbins praised for their preaching.
A misspelled and garbled OCR style excerpt presents the Star Spangled Banner with many errors and misprints. It includes phrases about dawns, stripes, the ramparts, rockets, bombs, and the line In God is our trust. The author signatures Francis Scott Key and the year 1814 appear distorted.
A two week sale cuts prices to one third of selling price and half wholesale on chinaware including 42 piece Bluebird sets at 4.98 and 31 piece sets at 8. The offer ends May 10. High Point voters elected P Ragan mayor in a sweeping Republican win on a largely nonpartisan ballot. Eleven hundred twenty five votes were cast from about 1300 registered, with Republicans dominating council seats except for K O Lindsay in ward 2. Democrats blamed past Brockett act politics for vote shifts. many Democrats crossed party lines to back Republicans. The city awaits a peaceful transition as Ragan takes oath and the council is sworn in next Tuesday evening.
