W. L. Stamey, councilman and mayoral candidate, pledges service over profit, touts free school books and playgrounds, water and sewer improvements, rail crossing relief, and a new city hall. He advocates municipal library, Y M C A space, cemetery care, and moral, progressive growth for High Point.
Citizens weigh fitness in mayoral choice as W. L. Stamey, councilman and local businessman, is urged as the capable leader for High Point. The letter cites his work for children, free school books, cemetery, streets, water, sewage and lights, and his active civic involvement as justification for support.
Mrs Kenneth Price has recovered from an operation at Guilford General Hospital and is at home. Mr and Mrs W E Price with their young son Billy have gone to visit relatives. Mrs Richard F J Johnson leaves for Scotland Neck to visit relatives then Norfolk on business and to visit her son at the Annapolis naval academy. Miss Je7 Weir, recently at Qedege, arrived in High Point to be Easter guest of her sister Miss Rutt Watson.

Guy E. Wells resigns after three and a half years as manager of the High Point Motor Company. He will remain in High Point, plans to sell and service Buick cars, and has not chosen a new location. The move is attributed to Dodge Bros. exclusive dealership policy.
Revival meetings opened Sunday night at 7 80 o clock in Robinson hall at the corner of East Green and Cable streets. Rev W M Stallings of Kannapolis will preach and the series continues through the week with services Sunday morning at 11 and every night at 7 30.
Rev. C. V. Brooks, the new pastor, arrived at noon today to begin duties at the growing West End Baptist Church in the west end.
Salisbury March 29 The Central Carolina Development Association calls a meeting at High Point Friday April at 7 pm The gathering previously postponed will consider several items including a proposed train connection between Goldsboro and Cincinnati A large Central Carolina turnout is anticipated
Dr J W Frazier of Spartanburg South Carolina served as principal speaker at a banquet hosted by High Point Kiwanis in the Elwood hotel dining room on Friday night.
The High Point mayoral race heats up as Fred N. Tate declares his candidacy. He joins W. L. Stamey J. W. Hedrick and Walter Royal, already in the field, all aiming for the city’s top post.
Southern Railways announces March changes. Train 48 will run Danville to Charlotte only, ending Charlotte Atlanta service after 11 30 p m March 26. Train 136 between Atlanta and Danville ends March 28 with key stops listed. Sleeping car service shifts to Charlotte Atlanta on trains 35 and 36, mirroring trains 43 and 136. Mrs C W Gaddy and daughter visit Mr and Mrs J D Bacon on King Street.
The eighth annual state intercollegiate oratorical contest will be held in High Point on Friday April 22 attracting statewide interest. Colleges from across the state are eligible with local campus contests selecting a school representative. A five judge panel will award 75 dollars to the winner and 50 dollars to the second place. The top speakers will send orations to national headquarters for comparison with peers nationwide. Previous winners came from Trinity College and the State University. Prof S E Blair Guilford College coordinates the High Point event.
Mrs. Mary J. Shepard widow of William McKendry Shepard died Friday morning shortly after 1 at her daughter's home following a long illness. Born August 9 1850 in Randolph County she married in 1870. Survived by six children three sisters and three brothers. Funeral held at 3 Sunday at 314 Thistle Street with burial in Oakwood cemetery. Mary Cunningham and Sadie Inman arrived for Easter holidays.
The Board of Directors of the Community Service of High Point met in the Chamber of Commerce rooms for the second time to adopt a constitution and set its mission promoting recreation and civic improvement. Rev P D Brown read the constitution which outlines playground oversight, parks development, and citywide projects including gardens music libraries and athletic facilities. A nominations committee was named for two vice presidents and a motion thanking local newspapers for cooperation was carried.
Charles R Beck, a High Point youth, died in action in France on October 12, 1918 at age 17. His body, escorted by military guards and draped in a US flag, arrived on train 32 and was buried Sunday at Mitchell's Grove church with Andrew Jackson post American Legion pallbearers.
W V Swain aged 91 prominent Guilford County resident died Saturday at his home two miles west of High Point. He spent nearly his entire life near High Point and is survived by his widow four sons and a daughter. The editor knew him as a personal friend and longtime subscriber to The Review and local High Point paper.
In Recorder's Court Venson Boyd a negro youth was arraigned on larceny charges in municipal court the case then referred to juvenile authorities when it was learned he is under sixteen I J Pearce pleaded guilty to violating a city ordinance and paid half the costs Dr A E Frazier fined five dollars and costs for allowing chickens to run at large Lula Kennedy white woman charged five dollars for disorderly conduct
The Associated Charities received 100 from four High Pointers after the Altapont hotel was renamed Sheraton. Contributors Wescott Roberson Francis J Elwood Cox and J A it each donated 25 dollars, fulfilling a prior pledge tied to the change.
High Point marked Easter with a near full suspension of business. College students arrived to spend the holiday with relatives in the area.
City Manager R L Pickett announced extended filing time for mayoral and council candidates in the upcoming High Point municipal election. Registration opens Monday and remains through April 23 with voting set for May 3. Voters will also decide on bonds totaling 175000 for school construction including 112000 for Russell Street school, 55000 for a eastern negro school, and 8000 for improvements.
Sing leader Frances Russell arrived in High Point on Tuesday for a three week visit to conduct community sings and singing leadership classes. Russell is noted as a successful leader in group singing with experience in major centers across the country. The committee hopes church and Sunday school representatives fraternal groups and other organizations join the class to learn leading skills and enliven meetings.
The Wesley Memorial church observed Easter with a 15 minute chimes and early morning prayer in the main auditorium. A second service at 5 30 featured the cantata The New Life by Rogers, lasting about an hour, with no evening service.
The High Point commandery Knights Templar joined a Sunday service at the First Methodist Protestant church marking their first attendance there. The Masons were welcomed by a large congregation as Rev. George R. Brown preached a sermon fitting the occasion.
The Sedalia singers from the Alice Freeman Palmer Memorial Institute near Owensboro delivered a concert in the high school auditorium on Tuesday night. The chorus, with over 25 voices, sang spirituals to help raise funds for a building they hope to erect and use, recently approved for this purpose.
