The Review reports the sale of the Elwood Hotel to Geo. T. Penny who sold a half interest to T. F. Wrenn. Value cited around a quarter of a million dollars with the building at 200000 and land at 150000. Plans include additions on Rankin street and possible expansion to East High street if adjoining property is acquired. No tenant leases exceed ten years. The property connects to J. C. Traded wives and liquor linked to crime case
In Smithfield on June 13, Iredell Wheeler admitted on the witness stand that he traded his wife to another man and gave a half pint of whisky and 25 cents to boot. He testified in a case charging four men with conspiracy to kill after guiding officers to a blockade distilling outfit raided on April 11, during which Deputy Sheriff J.
