The Belmont Sisters propose a balloon ascent as part of Fourth of July festivities to attract large crowds for the Exposition. The plan urges mayor and prominent citizens to back a banner celebration to draw visitors and showcase the event.
Mayor Tate orders a comprehensive census of all residents, school age children, poll tax payers, and all personal property to assess population and taxable value. A new city map will list real estate owners and locate unlisted properties for tax enforcement, with population estimates expected to exceed 12 000 to 14 000 in the next census.
The City Council approved the annual budget of about 49 200 with income of 50 000 and planned sale of 100 000 in city and school bonds for school buildings and the water department on July 7 for 30 years at 5 percent. Police resignations were settled with most resignations withdrawn and new officers appointed. The council plans to meet again next Monday.

Guilford County commissioners raised the levy eight and a half cents to fund road and bridge upkeep, while the total county tax rate increased from 11 3-4 to 12 2-3 cents per $100. The poll tax stays the same. Several township road repair appropriations were set, including amounts for Washington, Rock Creek, Greene, Madison, Jefferson, and others.
Train No. 10 derailed at Deep River bridge near Cumnock about 6 pm. The engine, three box cars, and a coach plunged into the river. Baggagemaster Boyden Stuart was killed. several crew and passengers injured, including Conductor Beachem and engineer R. C. Blalock with varied injuries.
The county and city extend tax listing deadlines to June 10. All property owners must list accurately and males 21 to 50 must list for poll taxes. Property owners who fail to list risk penalties. act now to avoid double taxes, says Mayor Fred Ntate.
