City borrows $5,000 for school property improvements

The Ejecto-File Company has purchased the High Point Manufacturing factory and will take possession January 6. The plant is equipped with modern labor saving machinery for cabinet making and will process material from raw state directly to the consumer.

The Army and Navy Y M C A controls post exchanges in France under Pershing to offer troopers tobacco and other items at wholesale prices with no profit. Cigarettes from Fatima to Velvet cost a few centimes, while transportation costs are covered by the Red Triangle. Capt George M Lynch, now with Red Triangle, reports prices have stabilized and troops pay cost.

Well Known Citizen J S Kinley Dies At 49

After a protracted illness J S Kinley aged 49 died Monday morning on Commerce Street. A prominent merchant and partner in Kinley and Frazier he was active in Woodmen of the World and Jr 9 0 A M. He leaves a wife and several relatives. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the family house and the remains interred at Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

Roadster Collides With Wagon Near Freight Depot

A club roadster driven by A. T. Wishart struck a wagon owned by C. L. Cecil near the freight depot opposite the Payne house. The horse was fatally injured and killed on the scene. The wagon shafts and buggy shafts were broken, fenders bent, and the car sustained damage. Wishart and Cecil suffered minor cuts and bruises. no serious injuries reported.

Home Service Department Report On Aid To City

Mrs. Frank Gurley reports for the Home Service Work in High Point from Oct 1 1918 to Jan 1 1919. The October 1 to November 1 period was previously released. Public donations totaling 2003.90 funded 40 purses and care for 115 families. In December state funds ran out. a city council appeal led to an aid extension. First week December reports 18 nurses aiding 15 stricken families and 17 other callers. expenses 165.16. Dec 10–17 four families received nursing help and 18 nurses worked. fuel food and laundry costs listed at 323.75. All cases with names and addresses are on file at Home Service rooms.

Friends of Sergeant Chester Green publish letters recounting his October experiences in France. He details promotion to sergeant, trench lines, shelling from Fritz, a 2 000 yard advance, machine gun fire, capturing about 100 Germans and several French prisoners, hospital return, and reports hearing heavy bombardments and thick barbed wire at the Hindenburg line. Ex President Roosevelt Dies After Rheumatic Attack

Early Monday Mrs Roosevelt found her husband dead in bed after a severe rheumatism and sciatica attack. He retired at eleven the prior night and it is believed rheumatism affected his heart. He is buried at Youngs Memorial Cemetery Oyster Bay in the plot chosen by Colonel and Mrs Roosevelt. Flags at the White House Capitol navy bases and army posts fly at half mast for 30 days in his memory.

D S Wiley of Jamestown Rt 1 reports a 4 foot hawk killed December 31. In 17 months he has captured 22 hawks and 3 large owls, setting a current record.
