The body of Tom Hedgin of this city died after being struck by a Plymouth train last Wednesday night. Elmer, also killed by the same train, arrived here Sunday and was buried Monday. Both men reportedly were on the tracks when struck and died after hospital treatment.
Auto accident two miles west of Wilson injures two, three others escape unharmed. W. H. Taylor and party include Hiawatha Davis Zola rd Milton Woodard. Miss Davis treated for fright. Miss rd unconscious and hospitalized. Local hospital.
Glan Hopkins 14 of Thomasville was instant killed when an automobile truck struck near Archdale road shortly after 1 AM Sunday. William Fife 16 suffered injuries as youths returning to High Point described the truck running fast and hitting a sand pile, tipping near over and pinning Hopkins beneath the vehicle. Body taken to Thomasville for funeral services Sunday afternoon. Hopkins survived by his parents and several siblings.
Dr. William B. Dodd of the University of Chicago condemns the spread of the McCombs autobiography and urges North Carolina to repudiate the press campaign. He praises Wilson as the greatest man of the century and notes editors refusals to publish work friendly to the President.
A High Point meeting led by state highway official J Elwood Cox discussed linking Randleman to the old Boone Wilmington plank road. If built via a two mile detour starting at St Pauls church the project costs about 50690 and Randolph County would finance. Alternate plan routes surface from Greenboro Randleman to Hinshaw fork.
City schools begin on September 12 with 76 teachers listed for the upcoming year.
Members of West End Baptist Sunday School held their final picnic at Thomasville on Saturday. About two hundred men women and children joined the outing traveling by automobile. They spent the day bathing or fishing and returned to the city late at night.
At First Baptist Church in DeLand Florida the Rev C S Farriss will fill the pulpit Sunday morning substituting for James A Clarke who is away from the city. Farriss is well known in High Point having visited here before.
Marion Ohio report notes President Harding had not yet sent telegraphic congratulations to his father Dr. George T. Harding on his marriage to office assistant Alice Stevens in Monroe Michigan yesterday. Vice President Coolidge sent felicitations and the Hardings planned to live in the longtime residence.
Census Bureau figures reveal Greensboro has 4.6 percent illiteracy, lowest among 14 cities studied, while Winston Salem shows higher rates due to a large Black population. Statewide illiteracy declined from 8.5 to 18.1 percent, with Buncombe County lowest in the state at 6.4 percent.
Dr I Thurman Mann commander of Andrew Jackson post of the American Legion was elected delegate to the department conference in Hendersonville on August 26 and 21. The post met Thursday night and approved the selection amid other business. Legion plans a watermelon feast here next week with date and place yet to be decided.
Mrs. J. M. Cates is killed when a train and a car collide on No. 37. Her daughter Mrs. Hedgpeth heads to Gastonia with relatives to bring the body to Augusta for funeral services. Mrs. Cates and daughter were en route from Charlotte to Greenville to visit Eunice Cates. Mr Leeman injured internally and Mrs Leeman bruised.
Miss Lou Cretia Owen resigns after ten months as High Point YWCA secretary to become employment secretary in Norfolk Virginia. Miss Helen Fitz will replace her with Miss Blanche Plot appointed for junior girls work and arriving before Owen departs. S. Rabinowitz advertises Dollar Day.
Atlanta reports Colonel W J Simmons imperial wizard of the Ku Klux Klan replied to Bruce Craven of North Carolina who claimed to have disbanded the Klan in that state Craven is not an officer or connected with the organization and lacks authority to suspend Klan activities in North Carolina.
Imperial Wizard proclaims that the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan uphold law and patriotism. The declaration asserts the group does not foster lawlessness or intolerance, vows oath compliance, and outlines its constitutional aims to protect the constitution and defend civil order amid public criticism.
Governor Cameron Morrison ordered two National Guard companies to Concord to quell unrest linked to a months-long cotton mill strike. Maj. R. R. Faison was placed in command amid ongoing hand-to-hand fights between special police and strikers at Locke cotton mills.
Winston-Salem Aug 16 Captain Ben H Gray reports to Kannapolis with his company at 11 20 am for duty related to strike at textile mills. Concord Aug 15 National Guard surrounds Locke and Hartsell mills to curb unrest in a strike involving about 8000 workers across Cabarrus and Mecklenburg counties.
The Gentry Bros circus arrives in High Point on August 18 with Billy Stiles as a top producing clown. The act blends shock comedy from ring thrillers with animal and human clowns. Stiles, former would be surgeon, leads the new act and provides the third big laugh after the opener.
W. Tom Best of Raleigh gave the principal address at the Springfield Memorial association service held at Springfield church. The session opened at 10 30 and closed late afternoon with a large attendance as the group discussed postwar Reconstruction work by Friends in North Carolina.
