James Jones, Jefferson Davis’s bodyguard and longtime Senate messenger, died in Washington after a life spent in government service. He never revealed the fate of the Confederate great seal, which he reportedly hid when Davis was captured. Jones was born in Warren County, NC, and later buried in Raleigh, having served in Raleigh fire ranks and as a Republican supporter before moving to federal work.
The body of John Henry Grant 19 of this city, killed in France October 17 1918, arrived in New York and will be brought to High Point for a planned military funeral before Saturday. Grant was in the 30th Division 118th Infantry, served in Company E, trained at General Algiers and overseas with his unit.
Ann Meredith, a white woman, was found guilty of larceny of 295 dollars from Holt. She was arraigned before Judge Kirkman and fined 50 dollars plus costs. Leif Jones and Roosevelt Murray were found not guilty of malicious trespassing at the Normal school on Washington street.
Nearly 400 in fines and costs were paid by defendants before Judge O. A. Kirkman in municipal court Monday. Additional cases were docketed for trial, the busiest session in months, though none drew significant interest.
Sib Burton of this city is hospitalized at Guilford General after a collision Saturday night when a car driven by Mrs. Charles Hamlin of Asheboro struck his vehicle at the South Main and Taylor street intersection. Burton suffered cuts and bruises but his condition was not considered serious. the badly damaged autos involved.
On the third day of Redpath Chautauqua the Mercer Company presents an unusual recital by its artists led by Harry Yeazelle Mercer. His voice is described as rich and powerful with expressive warmth that captivates audiences.

Postmaster J. J. Farriss announced in Washington he will retire from service at High Point on June 30. He will enter the printing business while remaining editor of the High Point News. Candidates to replace him are C. C. Robbins and O. R. York, with a likely presidential nomination for one of them.
An exhibition is scheduled at the Boston School on Wednesday April 20 starting at 10 o clock. Rev J S Hiatt of Winston Salem will deliver the address. J Oliver Brison led a large community singing event at the school on Sunday afternoon with high energy and clear precision. The Elks Band directed by Dr J Fred Tesh provided accompaniment for a program of familiar songs including Nearer My God to Thee Old Black Joe and The Star Spangled Banner. Brison also performed The Voice of the Wilderness showcasing his tenor range.
Eighteen High Point Rotarians and spouses boarded the Rotary Special train last Monday night to attend the seventh district convention in Norfolk. About 1,500 to 2,000 Rotarians from 48 clubs in North Carolina South Carolina and Virginia are expected to attend over Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday making it the district s largest and most enjoyable gathering to date.

Dr. R M Andrews of Greensboro and other conference educators visited High Point Monday night to review possible sites for a proposed Methodist Protestant college. Supper was served at the Commercial club, and speeches urged local support. The committee, hosted by R H Sechrest and colleagues, will reconvene April 20 to decide the college location.

Lewis A. Convis will present a keynote address on Bolshevism at the Red Path Chautauqua. He served with the Polish Legion of Siberia in 1918 and offers insight into Russian and Siberian affairs based on his experiences. G H Raper and H Poteat injured in a collision three miles from High Point. Their car, a Oldsmobile, collided with a truck owned by Briscoeath son of Dr H C Pitts of 502 Broadstreet. Raper and Poteat were treated and released from Guilford General hospital. The truck was driven by Robert Fox with Edward Hill as passenger. Hill sustained only slight bruises.
W L Stamey campaigned for High Point mayor at Capital Grocery No 800 South Elm Street drawing a large audience. He urged balanced amusements modern city halls a YMCA library and soldiers quarters merged into one building and listed campaign stops through the week at local stores and streets.
Miss Elizabeth C Biggs national field secretary visits High Point to support the Florence Crittenton industrial home Charlotte North Carolina founded 1903 by Protestant churches and Mr Charles Critenton. The Charlotte home has 26 girls 17 babies with two teen mothers and two feeble minded residents. Needs include maternity room beds sheets chairs and furniture plus a cow donation. Since 1905 the home has aided over 700 girls and babies and aims to reform girls led astray for the first time.
