City of Log Houses, Built by Mormons in 1846

Investigations by historian Andrew Jensen trace the 1846 Mormon retreat from Nauvoo to the Missouri River valley that became Winter Quarters and Florence. The settlement grew rapidly to 4,000–6,000, with a flour mill, schools, and churches, amid scarcity, disease, and mass burials. Brigham Young led plans for migration to California, while camp life and relations with the Omaha and Pottawattamie tribes shaped this early Nebraska chapter.
