Weather across the region improved as April and May moisture totaled nearly five inches. Heavy snows in early April, followed by a 53 hour rain and wet snow deluge, soaked the ground allowing pasture and crops to thrive. Local reports note widespread showers, few damages, and a shifting optimism for a wet year with seedings underway and crops showing life.
Chairman Alfred Arnell and village trustees, clerk-treasurer H Stevens, attended a Nebraska League of Municipalities district meeting in Sidney with state secretary C E Beales, executive president Fisher, and Lt Paine as speakers. A long round table covered municipal affairs, PWA developments, and Nebraska liquor law. Sidney hosted a banquet at the Commercial hotel for about fifty visitors as Ogallala, Chappell, Sidney, Lodge Pole, Potter, Dix, Kimball, Dalton, and Gurley sent representatives.
Mr and Mrs John Witt depart Saturday for two to three weeks visiting Indianapolis Louisville Nashville Chattanooga Helen Georgia Memphis Little Rock Fort Smith and Enid plus Mammoth Cave and Muscle Shoals project. Lila Lee stays at Lincoln Nebraska orphanage with friends as Witt attends Miller’s National Convention where he serves on the board.
Sunday school at 10 a m and morning worship at 11 a m with Mother’s Day spirit. Baccalaureate service at 7 30 p m. A cordial welcome awaits at all services.
Little Norman Dale Davis was dismissed from Kimball hospital last Friday after a 25 day stay for pneumonia. He is considerably improved and continues to recover.
The tenth annual Royal Neighbors of America tri county convention will be held at Seyfang hall Potter on Tuesday May 14 with all day sessions a 5 30 banquet and an 8 15 evening program open to the public. Deputy West and Supreme Officer Torkelson will speak. Tickets at 40 cents per plate for the banquet and registration begins at noon.
The Review announces a new serialized story titled Watch the Curves. It will begin in coming weeks after the final chapter of The Man from Yonder and will unfold week by week, inviting readers to follow the evolving tale.
Town board designates clean-up week to begin Wednesday May 15. Residents should place trash and ashes in or near the alley for collection by village trucks. Only ashes cans and other trash to be hauled no manure. Prepare by Wednesday morning.
Mr and Mrs Dean Randall of Beatrice Nebraska visited in Potter last Friday evening at the Ralph Robertson home. They were en route to their new home in Oregon.
The senior class traveled to Estes Park on their sneak day. They were joined by sponsor Mrs Josephine Johnson and chaperones Lee Hagemeister Joe Nelson and Mrs F W Vaughan.
Mrs Ross, one of the oldest members of the Royal Neighbors of America, has long been active in its work. She will deliver the welcome address at the county convention here next Tuesday.
Coyote Yips is Potter High School’s weekly student news sheet in the Potter Review published each Friday. The staff includes managing editor Maxine Wells sports editor Earl Anderson exchange editor Mary Alyce Hughes associate editors Jeanne Nelson Marie Robertson Kinley Herboldsheimer Keith Schwartz and reporters Donald Biggs LaVonne Vesey Gladys Smith Parker Nelson.
The last four days of school feature class night on May 16 at Seyfang hall 8 p.m. Commencement May 17 at Seyfang hall 8 p.m. May 20 offers a school exhibit and Patrons day. May 21 hosts an all school picnic at Johnsonsgrove starting 10 a.m. Public invited to attend all events.
The final senior edition bids readers goodbye as seniors depart next year. Non seniors pledge to continue serving readers to the best of their ability in the future.
Hits were evenly split though Dalton struck first. Dalton pulled ahead with seven runs in the fifth inning while Potter answered with five, led by three home runs from Roland Biggs Donald Biggs and Arvin Nielsen. A Potter win in the rematch would keep them in cup contention.
As 1934 1935 ends Potter High School greets a notable graduating group of 20 students. Four students earned typewriting pins this week as novices and champions prepare budgets for the all school exhibit. James Hall and LaVonne Vesey lead the list. nine pins have been ordered and another qualifier is hoped. Certificates of credit and proficiency will be awarded, with a roll of honor and certificates presented by the Southern Publishing Co.
Biographical sketches describe Kermit born January 12, 1918 near Potter. He excelled in Potter High School, sang in glee club, acted in The Attorney for the Defense, and favors science and math aiming for agriculture and farming in Colorado. Earl, praised as an ideal sportsman, captains softball and football, notable for a seventy yard touchdown run in a win over St Patricks.
The senior class invites the public to class nite on Thursday May 16 at Seyfang hall starting at eight o clock. This year's program features a three act play Pirates Gold with prophecies histories and orations woven in. Also seniors urge attendance at baccalaureate services at the Methodist church on May 12 at 730 p m.
Potter high school softball team traveled to Dalton last Thursday and suffered its first defeat of the year, 11 to 9, amid costly errors that allowed the opposing team to pull ahead.
John Nelson was chosen as city marshal replacing Guy Bartlett and was sworn in. Emil Nelson was named police magistrate to fill the unexpired term of M W Mayer. Henry Moench received a beverage license after purchasing his brother Herman's business. The board announced a new summer bulk water rate for 10,000 plus gallon users and noted ongoing water system improvements.
Dr. J. J. Fiegenschuh announces the softball season will begin Monday May 27 after school. The managing committee seeks every potential player by May 20 to form Potter teams and a schedule. Country teams arrive strong and eager to start. Potter faces a muddle to be solved. Sign up with the committee today.
Walter Henry expanded his hay hauling operation this winter and spring. He recently brought in 115 tons from Scotts Bluff county, bringing his total hauled to about 400 tons. He has stayed busy most of the season with this work.
Mrs Matilda Anderson purchases a new Plymouth coach from M W Osborn Motor Co of Sidney. Contractor Arnell is constructing a neat garage at the Anderson residence.
Mr and Mrs Theodore Carlson announce the birth of a son on Sunday May 5 at a Sidney hospital. Both mother and baby are reported to be doing nicely.
Former Potter resident Hec Con Davis now head of Fremont police since spring election. Peetz High achieved three firsts and one second prize in five music contests at Sterling during the county competition.
Mrs. Saral Dressier will retire as Brule telephone manager after 25 years of continuous service. She has served the community in the role since joining the facility in Brule, guiding local telephone operations and customer service. The retirement marks the end of a longtime tenure at the Brule plant.
Cattle losses in Banner county during the recent blizzard will run ten percent or more with every part of the county suffering. Losses are said to run from a few to 30 head.
Mrs. P. W. Woolridge, head of the FRERA work in Scottsbluff, and her five married women assistants have resigned amid tensions with the state office now under fire. The resignations were not accepted.
Gladys Parks a 16 year old from Gering is under arrest in Tulsa Oklahoma for complicity in the Fairland bank robbery. She has been indicted by the federal grand jury at Tulsa.
John Lewis Hanway eighty two died at his home in Bridgeport He was born in Greensburg Indiana and moved with his family to Sedgwick County Colorado in 1887 In 1895 he moved to Cheyenne County and settled near present Bridgeport He worked as a carpenter and bridge builder for many years His wife eight children and grandchildren survive him.
Reports from North Platte and Ogallala describe the dust storm as the year’s fiercest. In North Platte several yards of sidewalk were swept and dust weighed about two ounces per square foot, or 5,445 pounds per acre, while Ogallala recorded rain and hail and mud-darkened hair showing the storm’s sweeping reach.
Wm. Ryan died at his home in Los Angeles. He served as the first postmaster at Randol, a post office near Banner county, northwest of Harrisburg. Randol was discontinued when Centropolis was established, later renamed Harrisburg. He was the father of Mrs. George Koenig.
Max Lucero Fred Abeyta and Vivian Bacca were arrested in Gering for robberies at Casper and released on habeas corpus. They were immediately re arrested by Sheriff Webb of Morrill county for breaking and entering Searle-Chapin Lumber and the Ford garage at Bayard. Under sheriff S. R. Owens of Casper arrived with extradition papers signed by Governor Cochrane and the prisoners were turned over to him for trial at Casper.
Governors Cochran of Nebraska and Miller of Wyoming oversee a Guernsey meeting where park officials plan a vast Oregon Mormon California Overland Trails Historical Parks network. Eleven Central states Missouri Kansas Nebraska Wyoming Colorado Utah Idaho Nevada Oregon Washington and California would participate linking Mississippi River sites to the Pacific.
Advertisement from W. C. Sheets of Potter Nebraska promotes the best windmill made and offers services for mills cylinders well drilling and house moving. The note invites customers to see him when shopping and promises fair treatment.
Advertises weekly sales at the Sidney Livestock Pavilion promising top prices for fat hogs and inviting hog producers to try the service, claiming better returns.
Arley E. Fisher of Potter Nebraska offers mammoth bronze turkey eggs priced at 10 cents each or 0 per 100. Listing notes eggs available after May 15 with contact for buyers.
