In a week of major and lighter showers across the area many roads were washed out and bridges endangered. Potter saw light showers with a 0.39 inch peak Sunday, while a nearby farm gauge recorded 0.75 inch. Totals through June 82 at Potter reach 10.46 inches, mostly in spring and early summer, with regional variation in rainfall.
Jap Garret 30 of Kimball drowned while fishing eight miles west of Kimball in a reservoir. His body was recovered after a 90 minute search by Kimball volunteers. Garret swam out to dislodge a hook with his stepfather Len Ishmel also sinking. Ishmel was rescued by Peter Winther, Ishmel's son in law, but Garrett's body was not found. Surviving relatives include his mother two sisters and two brothers. It is the eighth drowning in the reservoir in 20 years.
Flood water covered the highway between Kimball and Dix spanning nine miles to two and a half feet. About 30 acres of adjoining fields were inundated. Heavy rain caused waters to rise in the south hills, flooding the valley and halting Eastbound railroad movement near Kimball as signal boxes were struck by lightning and track bed damage slowed the streamliner.
Dr A L Miller of Kimball files to succeed himself as state legislator in Nebraska's one house. He has toured states talking to tax experts and officials about good government. Rivals include Hagemeister Green Radcliffe and Stouteville. August 9 primary determines two candidates for November on non political ballot. Arthur Schubarth, formerly ill, is hoped to recover health.
Maurice A. Nelson, a prominent farmer from the south divide, has filed for county commissioner on the Democratic ticket. He joins nine other filings for the third commissioner district, with Democrats and Republicans listed alphabetically as C. P. Herboldsheimer, Paul Meyer, Maurice Nelson, August Schmidt, Lester Stecher, Ferd Wickhorst, Alfred Arnell, Ed Erickson, and W. C. Sheets. A large field ensures voters a strong choice.
Ten Potter errors helped Hereford score seven as Potter failed to plate runs. Peterson allowed six hits and ten strikeouts for Hereford, while Walters fanned 13 and Coulter hurt, with Biggs finishing behind the plate. Hereford led 1-0, then 2-1, before 7-0 final as Burns Potter continues season with next appearance at home.
Hugo Harmson president of the softball association calls a meeting to organize or schedule games. The gathering is set for Saturday, June 25 at 8:00 p.m. at the Farmers Union Oil station in Potter, inviting all local and nearby communities interested in organized softball.
Potter Post No. 291 American Legion held its annual inspection meeting Tuesday evening in the Potter Garage store room with about 18 in attendance. Dr. L. C. Barstow of Sidney acted for the state department and commended the post for attendance and interest. He was accompanied by R. V. Francis of Sidney. Roy Pritchard reported on his attendance at Boys State at Lincoln last week, thanking the Legion for the opportunity.
Many residents attended the pageant held in Bayard last week, with attendees from the surrounding community and local groups reporting strong turnout and support.
The first Cornhusker Boys State closed in Lincoln with final ceremonies in the Student Union where diplomas were issued to each participant. Governor William Dafoe delivered the closing address thanking sponsors and expressing hope for a permanent Boys State. Roy Pritchard, the Potter boy, attended with Ralph Robertson and others from western Nebraska towns aboard a Legion Post bus.
In 1897 a Sarpy County sect calling themselves the Figgites claimed occult powers and the ability to drive out evil by chastisement. Seven sisters once chased a devil from Gretna Christian church, pursuing through a cornfield before the devil escaped.

Lawrence H. Schwartz, senior vice commander of the American Legion of Nebraska, says mass meetings will be held this summer in a dozen Nebraska towns to inform farmers and others about the national shelterbelt tree program. The aim is to start the project in western Nebraska in 1939 or 1940 at the latest, with more details to follow.

In Chadron 1898 a jury found N P Owens not guilty after a trial over displaying a phonograph. Federal Writers' Project field workers noted the device as a scientific instrument exempt from license under Nebraska law.
The five members met on June 17 to study the score card for canned fruits and vegetables and to learn how to judge canned goods. Three girls participated in judging at the school in Sidney and gained valuable experience from the session.
Interest ran high for the heavyweight title bout between champion Joe Louis and Max Schmeling of Germany. The contest lasted 124 seconds of the first round before Schmeling was stopped by technical knockout after a relentless beating by Louis. It was the shortest and perhaps most one sided title fight in history. Bets remain on Joe against any challenger.
A violent wind at the John Bby farm north of Bushnell Saturday afternoon leveled a granary moved 18 feet from its foundation, toppled a garage, and tipped a windmill after flattening other small structures. No further damage reported in the area.
An auction sale of miscellaneous household goods and books from Mrs. Slocumb and the late Rev. L V Slocumb will take place at the Kimball Methodist parsonage on Saturday June 25 at 2 00 p m. Auctioneer Joe P Schwartz leads the sale.
Field workers of the WPA unearth two men on a road near the prairie disaster zone. They lie dead with a placard accusing them of setting fires. The incident mirrors the 1887 fires, suggesting summary punishment for arson.
Mr Anton Benish sr a respected pioneer marks his 90th birthday with 57 relatives and close friends at his farm home. The June 15 birthday was celebrated on Sunday to suit attendees a large luncheon was shared from baskets. He remains in good health and cheerful as the gathering closes with well wishes for many more years.

Mrs Glenn Ross and two children from Hollywood arrived for a several week visit at the home of Mrs Evan Stines and her family, staying with Mrs Ross' mother during this period.

The executive committee calls a general meeting next Monday evening at the bank to organize the 1938 Potter celebration. All committee members urged to attend to decide the date and whether the event will be one or two days, and to finalize arrangements.
Firefighters were summoned early Tuesday to combat a blaze at the municipal light plant. A fire in the engine pit lifted a manhole and flames damaged a small frame building housing an air cleaner, while heat shattered 21 panes of nearby glass. Insurance is expected to cover replacements.
Col Joe P Schwartz reports hogs topped $8.80 at the Tuesday Kimball Sales yards sale. Packing sows brought $6.55 to $6.60. Young feeders sold $5.90 to $6.00, a milk cow fetched $45.00, short yearlings around $6.05 per cwt. Several ewes sold at $3.90 per head. A good feeder pigs and a strong team of work horses have been consigned for the next sale.
Bearcats slugger Leo Fisher homered and Potter pitcher Peterson fanned ten as Lodgepole tallies collapsed. Bales allowed 18 hits and 15 Lodgepole errors led to 16 unearned runs in a one sided game before a large crowd. Fricke news noted. subscription plea ends.
