Illinois Supreme Court upholds state WWI bonus plan

The Illinois Supreme Court unanimously upheld the state bonus act, enabling about 300,000 veterans to receive 50 cents per day up to a $300 maximum. A $55 million bond issue will fund payments, expected to begin around July 1, with about 24,000 veterans paid monthly. The decision rejected claims that the pay violated constitutional limits and noted the American Legion’s pivotal role in passage.
