January warmth ends as frigid southeast winds collide with clouds. A light snow Thursday coats the ground, depths uncertain but coating streets. Temperatures dip to minus ten Wednesday morning and minus nine Thursday night, with overcast skies and a thermometer near zero.
Gurley will be here tonight to supply thrills for high school basketball teams. The Coyotes wind up their home schedule next Tuesday, February 14, with a meeting in Lisco. Both Gurley and Lisco have fast teams and the Coyotes know it. Come out and see some fine games.
The Potter Coyotes won a close game against Goodview on Tuesday, 28 to 26. Goodview dominated the first period with an 11 to 2 run, but Potter rallied late to squeak out the victory.
Mr and Mrs Karl Page returned to part of the week from a visit in California.
John Clausen Jr. Elevator announces reduced coal prices and promotes a modern loading method to speed deliveries and lower costs for customers amid industry-wide price shifts.
The board of education offered contracts to all ten members of the school faculty for another year, with expectations all will accept. Superintendent A B Connell was reelected in January and nine others were offered contracts this week. Notable staff include Minnie Rohlfing, Emmaline McLaughlin, Arthur Barrett, Ruth Armstrong, Viola Mudge, Alice Morrow, Fern Larsen, Lsther Shaw, Lula B Slocumb, across high school junior high grades and music. The janitor and bus driver positions will be filled by summer.
ST PAULS LUTHERAN CHURCH under Pastor H Boehnke invites readers to attend this Sunday. Located 12 miles northeast of Potter and 13 miles west of Gurley, the church holds Sunday school at 9 30 and worship at 10 in English.
Dr Miller discusses Nebraska unicameral legislature in Lincoln on February 4 1939 praising economy minded senators. He warns against bills serving special interests and urges consolidation of state legal advisory offices under the Attorney General to cut costs. He criticizes mandatory auto inspection and favors driver responsibility, noting tax increases tied to federal matching funds and rising state expenditures.
Pastor Co R Tanner invites readers to Sunday worship with district superintendent Paul M Hillman delivering the 11 o'clock message. Haworth League meets at 7 pm, youth Epworth League Institute runs all day Saturday February 11 starting 9 30 am with chancellor Schwartz of Nebraska Wesleyan University attending. Bible study planned at the Sheets home February 16 at 7 30 pm.
Superintendent L A Wiemers of Hemingford Public Schools has been offered a three year contract at Hemingford with a minimum salary of 2100 dollars and annual increases. Wiemers previously held a three year post here but left after the Hemingford offer.
In Potter a Chick Boyes show on February 18 will feature every business firm represented by a daughter in a tiny tot revue. From this group the audience will select Miss Potter 1939. The event accompanies the stock play Why Wives Go Wrong.
Mr O E Anderson of Fort Collins marked his 80th birthday on January 50 1939. He and Mrs Anderson remain healthy and active as early pioneers. Edgar Anderson and family of Potter visited to help observe the occasion and returned Tuesday.
The panhandle association of county officials will meet in Alliance on Friday February 17, per Joe W Leedom of Gordon district president. Cheyenne County is usually represented by the board of commissioners and the county clerk.
Maurice A. Nelson of Antelope Divide local Farmers Union and Edgar Leafdale of Sextorp local Omaha this week as delegates to the state convention. They are expected home the latter part of the week.
A Nebraska hearing considered reducing towing fees from ten to five dollars. The measure raised about forty eight thousand dollars yearly when passed in 1937 but currently yields only about seven hundred fifty dollars monthly. Car caravans spend money in the state and railroads see little benefit from the present high tow fee. The author argues against traffic barriers and predicts the fee cut would lure back towing business from Kansas and the Dakotas. A. L. Meller plans a detailed survey next week.
On February 5 1939 Mr and Mrs L K Nelson quietly marked their 64th wedding anniversary at their Antelope Divide farmstead. Married in Aurora Illinois on February 5 1875 they moved to Fremont Nebraska in 1877 by covered wagon and pioneered the old homestead in 1889. Present were Ed M Nelson HW A Lockhart J W Bertramson and IA Keith spouses and family members.
Lester Neil Grandbouche eight year old son of Mr and Mrs Lester Grandbouche of Gurley died at home Friday after long illness. Born March 7 1930 in Sundance Wyoming he later moved to Gurley. Funeral services were held at Dalton Presbyterian Church with Rev J J Sheaff of Sidney and Rev Clinton Senneff of Gurley officiating. Interment followed in Dalton cemetery. Rhce Funeral Home in charge. He is survived by his parents two brothers Kent and Gordon a sister Gail and three grandparents Mr and Mrs Christensen of Gurley and Mrs Louise Grandbouche formerly of Potter.
A gravel truck driven by Walter Henry and a light coupe driven by B R Graves collided at an intersection near Seyfamg hall on Monday morning. The gravel truck was traveling east and struck the rear of the northbound car. Graves was thrown from the car but escaped serious injury as the car sustained heavy damage. Sun glare was blamed for reduced visibility.
The Standard Bearers sponsor a bake sale on Saturday January 18 at the Johnson store starting at 11 00 a m Local readers are invited to purchase homemade treats and support the group’s fundraising effort.
Pleasant View residents and relatives visited neighbors and relatives across multiple evenings. A quilting party gathered at the Seemann home. Sunday guests included Meyers, Engels, Swan, and Baack families. Several calls were made to the Fiehler, Oberndorfer, Baack, and Schubarth homes in mutual social visits.
Officials announce a combined caucus on February 27. At the April 4 election two school board members and three town board members will be chosen. Outgoing school board members are D F Enevoldsen and August Schmidt. Town board members leaving are Alfred Arnell Joe P Schwartz and Dean Hagemeister. George Thirlwall is police magistrate elected last year for a two year term.
Mrs. Tom Iverson Betty and Ger tie Iverson Marvin Moench Mr and Mrs Henry Moench and Hilda traveled to Cheyenne Sunday to see Tom Iverson in the veterans hospital. They also spoke with Irma Moench and Mr and Mrs Carl Homan.
Kenneth Wickstrom of Potter, manager of the Kimball Sale Yards, suffered facial burns in an oil stove explosion the other day. Doctors treated him and the injuries appear to be healing well.
Irving Sanders was a business caller in Sidney Tuesday afternoon, engaging with local contacts and discussing potential trade matters and community concerns.
The Epworth League of Potter Methodist church hosts a mid winter institute for delegates and pastors at the Methodist church. Sessions begin at 9 30 am and conclude with a banquet at 5 30 pm. Chancellor Schwartz of Nebraska Wesleyan and district superintendent Hillman are among the leaders attending.
Miss Olivette Sloan's kindergarten rhythm band from Sidney Iowa won first prize in a recent amateur contest among 23 entrants. The 19 five year olds received a cash prize and broadcasting rights from a Shenandoah station heard last Saturday afternoon. Dr and Mrs Wi T Sloan attended the broadcast.
Mr and Mrs Frank Mueller and children joined Mr and Mrs C G Gemein hardt and daughter Wauneta for a Friday gathering. The Moerch family also spent time together and played sheepshead. A casual, friendly afternoon with neighbors and relatives.
Mr and Mrs Peter Hansen returned the first of the week from Danne brog. Mrs George Jason known as Nora Hansen, went to Savannah Missouri for a few days before returning.
