Reports from Martinique detail the devastation after a volcanic eruption. Government vessels evacuated officials and refugees while lava, heat, and toxic fumes hampered relief. Officials fear thousands dead and aid agencies urge immediate food and supplies.
Forty five collieries in the Ninth Mining District are tied up by 20 655 workers in a three day suspension. Mining in Hazelton and other districts is halted. President Mitchell says the anthracite tie up is complete with about 14 000 idle. DL&W and others plan no lockout but expect coal famine after Wednesday. Wyoming valley mines are fully idle with foreign workers seeking mill work.
In Washington on May 12 the President sent a message to Congress requesting an immediate appropriation of 500000 for relief of volcanic disturbance victims in the West Indies. The Martinique disaster was debated in the Senate and a separate House vote approved 200000 for Martinique sufferers.
A consumer alert notes Laxative Bromo Quinine Tablets to be refunded by druggists if the product falls short of standards. Each box bears the signature of KH W Grove. The notice warns buyers to return affected lots for refunds.

The community mourns the loss of a bright, beloved young man with a hopeful future.
Port au Prince Haiti May 12 reports confirm a revolution after President Simon Sam resigns. Three parties have taken up arms and are ready for hostilities as severe street fighting escalates. The situation remains very serious.
The Congregational church congregation met after services and unanimously decided to build a new church. Trustees will handle plans and contracts, aiming for a summer start. Likely site at Garfield Avenue and Clarke Street opposite the High School. The structure is expected to be the finest in the city.
California limited train on the Santa Fe at Revere Missouri near the site of a prior wreck broke a dining car wheel and hit a freight car. One man named Anderson was killed and a woman injured.

At a special meeting the Committee on Appropriations decided to report the relief bill for the citizens of the French West Indies and to appropriate 200000 dollars, 100000 more than the Senate measure. The acting chairman was instructed to call up the bill this afternoon.
City announces all dog taxes due by May 1 with penalties for failure to pay by May 31. Unlicensed dogs will be taken up and destroyed under City Ordinance No 4. George Ross, Chief of Police, signs notice.
