Disaster at St Pierre Martinique described as a steam mud and fire whirlwind. Reports say 40,000 dead with many missing. eighteen ships burned or sunk and the governor and consuls perished. Residual tremors and ongoing eruptions threaten nearby islands as rescue efforts proceed.
The Senate resumed consideration of the army appropriation bill and passed it after debate. An amend ment to bar use of funds for a coronation embassy was withdrawn. A resolution asserting presidential appointment power without Senate consent was laid over. In the House, a Idaho railroad right of way through Nez Perce lands was approved, and 5000 copies of Jefferson’s Bible were ordered printed. Public business closed with eulogies.
Bandits stop an express train in Arkansas to press demands calling a convention moment to decide on immediate strike action or wait for a more favorable moment.
A temporary work halt order at collieries spurs miners to plan a St Louis convention while westbound Hazelton trains face delays. Four masked men loot a train at Marsh Siding near Francisco, blowing the express car safe with dynamite and fleeing as a posse hunts them.

Chicago May 10 The second step in the Beef Trial investigation was taken with a filing for a temporary injunction in the U S Circuit Court. The motion, filed by Attorney General Knox U S District Attorney Bethea and Special Counsel Day, rests on allegations to be argued in the circuit court within about ten days.
Superintendent Siders reports May is busy with public school activities. Measles and families moving reduce attendance. 727 total pupils, average daily attendance 675. Commencement runs May 25 to 29 with services at Episcopal church, Mormon church entertainment, Baptist graduation exercises, and a theater-like high school program.
