Darrow Outlines Defense in Haywood Trial

Clarence Darrow addressed a Boise courtroom outlining the defense for W. D. Haywood in the Steunenberg murder case. He argued the Western Federation of Miners is an industrial group, accused Pinkerton agents of mounting the case, and promised twenty five witnesses to dispute Harry Orchard’s testimony. He praised Haywood Moyer and Pettibone as honest leaders and noted the defense would resume at 2 p.m.

Lemhis Move to Ft Hall Amid Indian Reception

The Lemhi Indians’ second and third contingents travel from Lemhi valley to the Ft Hall reservation to be allotting lands. About thirty lodges pass through Blackfoot, with horses guns lodge poles and wagons. They report to Major Caldwell at Ross Fork for placement with Indian advisers. A large Shoshone Bannock welcome will be held in a week with the Lemhi band performing. The government plans a training school room to be ready by September.

Telegraph companies report steady operations amid strike in San Francisco

San Francisco reports both Western Union and Postal Telegraph companies moving business satisfactorily. Western Union says many operators are on duty and several applications for work are expected today.

Murder trial opens for former judge in Nelson county

In Houston Virginia on June 24 former Judge W G Loving of Nelson county stood trial in circuit court before Judge W K Barksdale charged with killing Theodore Estes son of Sheriff M K Estes. Estes died after Loving fired a double barreled shotgun while Estes unloaded a fertilizer car at Oak Ridge on April 22. Loving claimed Estes wronged his daughter after a buggy ride and alleged intoxication. The case draws prominent parties and high public interest, likened to the Bywaters case in Culpeper.

Queen Wilhelmina to Receive Peace Delegates at House in the Woods

The Hague June 24 Queen Wilhelmina arrived today and will receive delegates to the peace conference at the House in the Woods two miles from the Hague. The third committee of the international peace conference met in the Hall of Knights behind closed doors with General Horace Porter Brigadier General Davis Rear Admiral Charles S Perry W J Buchanan and James Brown Scott in attendance.

Five Die in Passenger Train Collision Near Pittsford

Rochester report says five persons were killed and several injured when a New York Central passenger train collided with a freight train one mile east of Pittsford during the night. The crash occurred near Pittsford, and the casualty list includes five dead with injuries to others.

Tornado Destroys 25 Homes in Medicine Lodge

Three tornadoes hit Medicine Lodge Kansas last night. Twenty five houses were destroyed in the northern part of town. Six people were seriously injured and one is missing. No fatalities reported.

Dubois to be Honored at Elks Club Reception

Johnson Executed in Sing Sing Electric Chair

New York June 24 John Johnson, who murdered his wife in Yonkers in front of their two children, was executed in the Sing Sing electric chair today. The case drew attention as Albert T Patrick, famed for the Rice murder, mentored Johnson on appeals from the death house.

Foresters Gather in Gate City for Chief Forester Address
