A report describes two explosions causing five deaths at Hercules plants and details surrounding the accident scene. Police and emergency teams investigated the blast sites as investigators searched for causes and safety lapses.
B A McDevitt of Pocatello reelected chairman of the Bannock Infantile Paralysis foundation at the Hotel Bannock. Officers named include Lyon Heary vice chairman Paul W Scott secretary Neal Jordan treasurer Arthur W Hall and Judge L E Glennon as directors and Mrs V D Lyons women’s chairman. Twenty one polio victims were treated last year at a cost of eight thousand dollars with three still under treatment in Boise. Mrs Lyons reported on the May 28 29 polio emergency training school in Pocatello. Representatives from seven counties are joining Bannock in operating the acute treatment center at Pocatello St Anthony hospital.
Earl Jenkins a 50 year old World War II veteran was found dead in his Driggs hotel room around noon Monday. The death was attributed to a heart attack and no inquest will be held. He was born May 3 1898 in Malad and was to begin work at the Pocatello naval ordnance plant next week after a recent exam. Survivors include his mother Anna P Jenkins Rupert a sister Mrs Fred Meloy Pocatello and a brother Ed R Jenkins Pocatello. Funeral arrangements are with Hall mortuary.
Detroit four Chrysler Corp increased prices for its passenger car models with no exact figures given. Plymouth models added 40 to 50 dollars, Dodge line up about 6 to 4 percent. The move follows similar hikes by Ford Hudson Packard Studebaker and Nash due to higher production costs, materials, and labor.
The Hercules Powder Company nitro glycerin plant in Pinole California exploded Monday afternoon. The blast injured and possibly killed workers, with two believed dead and three others missing. The explosion shattered windows over Contra Costa County and blocked Highway 40 as crowds swarmed the site. Ambulances and emergency crews rushed to the scene.
Coroner Arthur W. Hall announced no date for the inquest into Frances Greco’s death on June 13. He said cyanide poisoning is virtually established and not self-administered, with husband Charles Greco hiring counsel to aid investigators as a study determines the poison type.
Kenneth Johnson age two, son of Mr and Mrs Emil Johnson, was struck by a city engineering department station wagon in the 1100 block East Bonneville about 4 50 pm Monday. He sustained a broken leg above the knee and was reported in fair condition at St Anthony hospital. Driver Brent Ballif said he backed the wagon to locate a street address. officers believe the child stepped from the curb while playing.
Senator Glen Taylor of Idaho, a third party vice presidential candidate, said Dewey would win the Republican nomination and Wallace would become president in a three way split. He noted he is not in the race for exercise. PMID: none
Mountbatten retired as governor general and India’s self rule was declared by its people. Chakravarthi Rajagopalachari was sworn in as his successor, becoming the first Indian to hold the post. He wore loincloth and homespun attire in a ceremony marked by red velvet drapes and gold embroidery.
Russell M. Anspaugh, 40, died Monday from a shotgun blast after allegedly shooting his wife Ollie, 28, in the back as she ran on Sunday afternoon, then killed himself. Deputy Tom Hanson reported the 20 gauge weapon used. Ollie Anspaugh had only a slim chance of recovery, according to Dr. H. C. Mowery, county coroner and physician.
John Book Ballard known as Chief Ballard, a colorful Shoshone figure of Fort Hall, died at 12 45 p m in a local hospital at age 73. Born amid disputes about his birth date, he became famed for his life of hunting, fishing, and leadership among the Fort Hall community.

Retta McGhie Hansen 80 died Monday at her Reed apartments home. Born March 19 1868 in Murray Utah she moved to Lewisville Idaho forty six years ago and came to Pocatello in 1922. She married Parley H Hansen in 1887 and was an LDS member. Survivors include two sons four daughters twenty seven grandchildren and seven teen great grandchildren two sisters. Funeral arrangements by Hall mortuary.
R McCormick reports the Republican national convention opens in Philadelphia with confident talk of nominating a president yet unclear who the candidate will be. Key speakers Gov Dwight Green and Clare Boothe Luce set the tone as contenders Dewey Taft Stassen top the ballot prospects, with a dozen hopefuls aiming for the first ballot.
Ter County Utah reports eleven persons killed on highways in Box Elder this year, eclipsing the previous annual high of 1940. Historical tallies show 1942 nine, 1943 five, 1944 one, 1945 seven, 1946 seven, 1947 four, 1941 none.
Clarence Herbert Gabriel a 36 year old Salt Lake salesman was arrested in Pocatello Sunday night by detectives John Perkins and George Hadley in connection with a hit and run three miles north of Blackfoot. He was returned to Blackfoot by State Policeman Randall Dexter where he is charged with leaving the scene after a collision and not stopping.
Pocatello youths may join a series of tours sponsored by the Tribune to view local businesses and facilities. Registrations are to be made tomorrow through Friday at designated sites including Irving field Recreation Hut and several parks and schools. The first tour is scheduled Wednesday afternoon with transportation provided by the Retail Liquor Dealers Association.

East Idaho highway group for US 91 and 191 will meet Thursday at the Bannock hotel with delegates from Rigby Idaho Falls Blackfoot Rexburg St Anthony Ashton and Pocatello. Delbert Groom of Rigby chairs the meeting to complete the organization and review the two lane project from the Utah line north to West Yellowstone on 191 and to the Montana line on 91.
Nick Carter, a Boise cab driver, arrived at St. Alphonsus hospital just as a baby girl was born to Mrs. Orley Stumbaugh. He joked he lost the race when he heard the newborn cry. Both mother and daughter are reported doing fine by hospital staff.

William Maxwell Kinney 52, retired Union Pacific machinist, died at 115 Taft avenue after a lingering illness. Born March 6, 1896 in Dubois, he moved to McCammon in 1903 and to Pocatello in 1923. Survived by widow Annie Louise Hobbs, five sons, sister Myrtie Orgill, two brothers, two half brothers, LDS member. Funeral arrangements announced by Hall mortuary.
Exhibition car 200 touring the Union Pacific system shows educational films for railway employees. It has been in Pocatello since Friday and leaves tonight at 11 40 p m. The car’s first two days were led by B B Brady, Omaha, with films on freight handling. Monday and today featured courtesy topics presented by C E B Norris.
