The GOP nomination fight threatens to extend the Philadelphia convention as Dewey Taft and Stassen vie for delegates. President Truman heads home confident of a Democratic first ballot nomination in July, courting price relief and welfare bills amid ongoing talks and stumbles.
Miss Esther Kissane of Pocatello returns Sunday on the Streamliner from Oberlin Ohio where she spent the year at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. A second semester junior majoring in piano and minoring in voice she studied under Dr Frank Shaw Miss Beryl Ladd and Professor John Conrad. She attends Oberlin on a special scholarship and is the daughter of Professor and Mrs Donald Kissane.
The federal works agency ships equipment to Bonners Ferry and Orofino Idaho after floods. A University of Idaho water purification system is in Bonners Ferry, with similar facilities and sewage disposal planned for Orofino. Thirty two quonset huts head to Orofino from Cincinnati to replace lost buildings, while St Maries gets six dump trucks power shovels a bulldozer and other gear for bridges.
Two fires within 24 hours caused combined losses exceeding 30 000 dollars. A large farm equipment shop owned by Ray Geisler and sons east of Preston burned after water shortages hampered crews. The second fire destroyed Utah Power and Light substation equipment with about 3090 dollars in copper and gear. Fire chief C I Goff noted spectators and volunteers blocking access, with nearly 30 tickets issued for such behavior.
The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that a prisoner unable to defend himself has an absolute right to a lawyer in any criminal case. Denial of counsel invalidates the conviction. The decision broadens the prior rule tied to potential death penalty cases and overturns Donald Wade’s 1945 burglary conviction in Palm Beach County, Florida.
Roy L. Chapman of Rigby was killed in a Sunday automobile crash twelve miles south of town. State Policeman Bob Lewis said Chapman aged 50 to 60 suffered a crushed chest when the car overturned.
Frances duPont Morgan obtained a divorce in Pocatello from Richard Dorsey Morgan on desertion grounds. The settlement includes $93,000 paid over 15 years, $600 monthly for ten years and $350 monthly for five years, plus life insurance premiums and transfer of Morgan's interest in personal property to Morgan. Custody of Frances Carroll Braxton Morgan, 7, was awarded to Mrs. Morgan with paternal visitation rights.
The 19 through 25 draft bill moves to the house floor after a five week bottleneck. The rules committee sets a three hour general debate with longer amendment time. Elements include registration for 18 to 30 and two years service, plus civil rights amendments and presidential discretion on start dates.
Sheriff Dean F Wilk says a man walking on the Yellowstone highway seven miles north of Idaho Falls was struck and killed by a car driven by Ray Smith 19 of Rigby. Identification was being sought Monday for the deceased.
The two story fall of window washer Victor G. Meclin 55 at the Eagles Lodge in Wallace Idaho is a fatal incident raising the state’s death toll in recent weeks to twelve. Meclin was cleaning windows when he fell from a ladder.

128 girls from 70 towns attend the opening sessions of the Girls State convention. Mrs Myrtle Miller names city counselors and announces the first Girls State newspaper Fem Gems with editors from Idaho cities. A permanent constitution committee is named and a fireside chat on forest soil conservation precedes the day’s program including a flag ceremony and assemblies with state leaders.
The Senate appropriations committee added 2,000,900 to the interior department bill to start Palisades Idaho irrigation construction with a total potential of 3,750,000. It also allows Bonneville Power to contract up to 161,000 for Sandpoint Bonners Ferry transmission lines. Additional boosts raise Payette division Boise project to 1,650,000 and Minidoka north side preconstruction to 170,000.
A U S district court judge granted a temporary injunction stopping a threatened nationwide strike by more than 100 000 maritime workers. The order names CIO affiliates National Maritime Union Marine Engineers Beneficial Association and American Radio Association plus unlicensed seafaring personnel and 54 shipping companies. It bars lockouts and calls for good faith collective bargaining.
The Idaho Tax Commission began its June session conferring with representatives of Union Pacific Chicago Milwaukee St Paul and Pacific Great Northern and Northern Pacific railroads The session aims at routine business on Tuesday Clark County commissioners plan a Wednesday meeting to discuss property valuations.
Lawrence J. Reddy, a 21 year old Okinawa naval veteran, pleaded guilty to second degree murder in the St Valentine day killing of 17 year old Beatrice Blanchard, a babysitter. Judge Frank J. Murray sentenced him to life imprisonment. Assistant DA John F. Ryan said no sex crime was involved.
A Nebraska dam site worker damaged two long distance telephone cables near Chappell cutting 809 telephone lines and 300 telegraph lines. The outage affected coast to coast services with AP wire photo and radio circuits, first restored within three hours and full repair targeted by 7 p.m. EST.

The Progressive party of Delaware organized in Wilmington with Sen Glen H Taylor of Idaho as the principal speaker backing Henry A Wallace for president and Wallace’s running mate.
President Truman delivered a Walton-style eight point program in a Cocoanut Grove speech to about 1,100 attendees. He pressed Congress to act on price controls housing social security expansion health education labor reform farm price supports and water and flood control. He criticized the 80th Congress for dismantling the labor department and cutting development budgets and called for integrated power projects on the Columbia River Basin central valley California and the Colorado River to prevent summer brownouts.
W P Havenor dismissed retirement rumors after The Tribune reported he might retire. He told a Tribune reporter on Monday he intends to file for surveyor soon, saying the people will decide his fate, not the paper. His aide Bob Carter was predicted as a Democratic candidate for the August surveyor nomination.
Bannock county moves toward July 12 filing deadline as about 24 days remain for candidates to enter county precinct and state legislative races. Nine people had filed with county clerk Anna Keefe by Monday, split among Democrats and Republicans. Names include Alma Marley Nellie Cline Steenson W H Pete Jensen Roy T Hale Clarence Jeffery on the Democratic slate and Willard Lund George C Adams W E Magnuson Gertie Meyers on the Republican side.
