Washington reports machinery for a peacetime draft is nearly set and inductions could begin 60 to 90 days after the draft law takes effect. The House Rules Committee decides on floor action amid a divided 12 member panel as the bill awaits passage.
Summer Vacation Bible School opens today under Pastor H. M. Harder at First Mennonite Church Aberdeen Grandview. Wilma Harder and Fern Baer lead the program with sessions at 9 a.m. A special program is planned for Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m.
Portland reports the Columbia River cresting to 30.2 feet at Vancouver as floodwaters threaten Troutdale aluminum works. Dikes hold in the lower valley but damage tops $140 million with new breaks and a weeks-long danger as waters begin to recede slowly.
The air ministry announced that six Royal Air Force Handley Page Hermes aircraft are set for an Atlantic crossing within weeks. The jets will fly to Canada and the United States to participate in U S air force air support and interception exercises under field conditions at the Ninth Tactical Air Force base in Greenville South Carolina.
GOP leaders apply pressure to pass a set of major bills before adjournment. The agenda includes a two year draft bill, a one year extension of the reciprocal trade program, farm price supports, a housing measure, an appropriations bill, and a renewal of atomic commissioners in office through 1950. They warn Truman nominees could be stalled if Democratic opposition persists and note Senate action remains uncertain on Mundt Nixon anti Communist and oil tidelands titles bills.
Western allies postponed talks on forming a new government in western Germany at Paris request. If French approval comes, discussions may restart later in the week. General Clay announced the postponement in Frankfurt amid Communist plebiscite activity and German criticism of the plan.
The District 10 meeting of the Veterans of Foreign Wars concluded with John Dudenake of Pocatello elected district commander. He is joined by Ray Fackrell of Preston as senior vice commander Chad Stevens of Blackfoot as junior vice commander Jim Chivers of Pocatello as quartermaster J A McQuillam of Pocatello as advocate Dr H D Hartvigsen of Pocatello as surgeon and Richard E Carter of Pocatello as chaplain. Seventeen delegates including State commander Ed Gaumer attended the Memorial Hall session directed by T W McCabe retiring district commander.
Mary Clay Watts 43 is accused of first degree murder in the months long arsenic and mercury poisoning death of her 11 year old daughter Barbara Ann. Coroner and police say the husband died of arsenic poisoning though no charges were filed.
Mrs. Royden J. Keith president of the National Federation of Music Clubs spoke at the Congregational church on music as a force for world peace and religious revival. The program featured Virgil Camp and the Polyminian Singers with soloists and accompanists. Keith praised the audience turnout and future of Camp.
Idaho Girls State delegates arrive at Idaho State College for a weeklong program on state county and city government. About 135 participants hosted at Graveley Hall will attend opening events, elections, and joint legislative sessions with speakers and auxiliary staff from multiple cities and organizations.
The district encampment of the Veterans of Foreign Wars opened Saturday in Memorial Hall with a dinner and dance. Idaho department commander Ed Gaumer attended. Business sessions begin at 1 p.m. with District Commander T. W. McCabe presiding and Gaumer as distinguished guest. new district officers will be elected.
In a Taft Hartley move, courts could issue blocking orders in major seaports to end a seven union shipping strike within about 80 days or until early September. NLRB hearings start in Chicago on alleged violations over hiring halls tied to Great Lakes contracts. President Truman directs action to prevent national health or safety threats as walkout deadline looms set by Bridges affiliated unions.

President Truman urged belief in a peaceful world during a Golden Gate Park address to about 30,000 people. Tickets are tight as 13000 seats at Convention Hall are split between official business and public access while arrangements chief Walter Hallanan foresees a difficult nomination process and strict speaking time limits. Georgia faces a major seating dispute with Taft and Dewey factions contending for delegates.
Four men were killed Sunday in a truck auto crash on U S Highway 50 west of Grand Junction. Victims identified by the county coroner are Orson E Taylor 25 of San Francisco Albert M Hicken 23 of Monticello Utah Raymond Carter 23 of Santaquin Utah and James Ezra Stevens 24 of Dragerton Utah. Charles Hall of Denver and his assistant Albert Wagner also of Denver sustained minor injuries.
One hundred and fifty nine planes flew into Mackay airport for the third annual aviation fish fly breakfast. Low southern Idaho ceilings reduced attendance. Prizes awarded to pilots include Bud Pardy best all around, Zella McCombs and Mariana Gates for traveling farthest by women pilots, Marilyn Hoff youngest, Christopher Scott oldest, Berd Wagner farthest traveling, B J Roestler best spot landing, Hare told Dale best pattern.
Gov. Thomas E. Dewey predicted he would win the Republican presidential nomination after not too many ballots at the 40th annual national conference of governors in Newcastle New Hampshire. He cited a break among key states and did not identify them. He said a New York Times estimate of 329 votes for him and 250 for Taft seemed not far off. He kept an open mind on the vice presidential selection and noted a real movement for him nationwide.
