In Washington, workers confront wage tensions at both small shops and large industries as the Northwest Federation of Woodworkers mobilizes about 40 organizers to push a broader campaign. The action follows early today amid rain at strike gates and coastal labor activity.
Amelia Earhart reached Gao in French West Africa at 2 50 p m Greenwich time after departing Dakar in a west to east route. She had taken off from Quakam Airport at 6 35 p m Greenwich mean time heading toward Naimey, with weather forcing a course change.
Maj. Clarence Hodge and Lieut. Joseph McNeil parachuted from a stricken plane near Reno after a violent snowstorm. They traveled by train toward Salt Lake City to report on a Utah air tragedy from December that killed seven on a Western Air Express transport near Ely. Army, Commerce, and Utah aeronautics officials probe continues with inspectors seeking wreckage location between Ely and Elko.
Admiral Richard Byrd reports in London that Britain advances territorial claims in Antarctica saying no controversy over the region and its coal riches. Byrd notes his explorations and asserts British holdings include vast coal potential reaching toward the pole.
Carl Stockdale a 63 year old actor testified he visited Charlotte Shelby the mother of Taylor fiancee Mary Miles Minter the night of the murder Stockdale said he arrived before 7 and left about 9 and was the first to inform Shelby that Taylor had been slain the claim adds a new wrinkle to the 1922 case in Los Angeles.
Randall L. Jones, representing Union Pacific, told Rotarians today that Sun Valley is better known as a recreation area than Utah parks due to concentrated advertising. He highlighted Bryce, Zion and Grand Canyon visuals and discussed tourism development in the western states. Local Rotarians included Falk, McGowan, Peterson, Baum and others from Salt Lake City.

The Senate Agricultural Committee sent the administration farm tenancy bill to the floor with a unanimous recommendation. It creates a farmers' home corporation authorized to spend 10 million dollars next year to aid tenants to buy land, with rising appropriations thereafter. The House bill proposes 60 million first year and quicker title transfer upon payment. Secretary Wallace backs swift passage citing farm belt needs and drought relief.
Washington June 10 President Roosevelt sent to the senate his nomination of John A. Carver for reappointment as United States district attorney for Idaho. Carver, a Preston, Idaho native, was first appointed in 1933 on the recommendation of Senator James P. Pope. He is a University of Idaho graduate, married with six children, and has served as Franklin county prosecuting attorney and Pocatello police judge.
A farewell dimmer in the Union Pacific dining room honored L. J. Londo local manager of Citizens' Utilities Co as he prepares to move to Minneapolis as public relations director. The event drew many from St Joseph and St Anthony parishes with Very Rev Edmund R Cody presenting a going away gift and praising his leadership in local Catholic activities.
Boise June 10 Secretary of State Ira H Mastera told Gov Barzilla W Clark he takes full responsibility for the discharge last week of P C O Malley as state insurance fund manager The board of examiners had nothing to do with it Masters said he found O Malley ran his office well and over spending occurred during Idaho's statewide red period
Governor Barzilla W Clark appointed Dr James W Hawkins of Coeur d Alene as director of the division of public health to succeed Dr J D Dunshee. Hawkins has led Twin Falls county health unit. Dunshee left for Pasadena to be with his ailing wife. Commission dated June 7 1937 and effective through January 2 1939.

Washington June 16 a senate appropriations subcommittee rewrote the administration's 1.5 billion relief bill to require local communities to cover forty percent of relief project costs indicating a shift in funding responsibility.
President William Green of the AFL called for immediate funds to oppose John L. Lewis and his CIO, describing a war on the federation. The AFL council proposed a one cent per member extra assessment to boost its war chest by about thirty thousand dollars monthly, while noting rising union charters and applications. The AFL claimed about three million members as of May 29, with CIO support figures ranging from seven to thirty million in estimates.
