Widespread floods from the West Coast into Illinois and a large tornado outbreak cause extensive damage. Des Moines and Mississippi floodwaters rivet the nation as towns like Alexandria Missouri and Ottumwa Iowa report heavy losses. Red Cross notes many rescues and fatalities amid rising death tolls and millions in damage.
A new labor union named the Communications Workers of America forms at its first convention in Miami Beach led by 36 year old Joseph A Beirne. The group aims to organize 570000 telephone workers and attract telegraph and radio technicians, while debating whether to affiliate with CIO or AFL or remain independent. The CWA succeeds the National Federation of Telephone Workers which dissolved yesterday.
Russell V. Mack, Republican, captured Washington's third district seat in a tight race for Congress, defeating Democrat Charles Savage by about 1,500 votes. Savage charged smear tactics, while Mack framed the result as support for bipartisan policy and a continuation of national aims.
Mrs Leta Dougal 36 of Boise remained in good condition at St Luke s hospital after a collision yesterday between her car and the Union Pacific steamliner City of Portland at a crossing six miles west of Boise. The front of her car was struck by the locomotive and the car was tossed 30 feet. The City of Portland was five and a half hours late after a freight derailment in eastern Oregon delayed the train.
Pioneer Baseball League president J. P. Halliwell announced fines for Salt Lake City Bees players. Manager Rupert Thompson was fined 25 dollars for profane language toward an umpire during the June 4 Bees versus Orden Reds game. Second baseman Bob Robb received a 15 dollar fine for a similar offense in the same game.
President faces a flood of mail from individuals and organizations urging vetoes on two bills. Charles G. Ross notes most letters oppose the labor bill while returns from Canada flow ahead of the president returning Friday night. The tax cut bill must reach him by Monday midnight to avoid becoming law without his signature.
Bids are requested to remove about 213 acres of standing grasses and crested wheat from Pocatello Army Air Base. Closing at 1 p m June 20 in Portland Oregon. Copies available from county agricultural agent and county recorder and post office. Crop may be reenowned before August 1. Inspections allowed before bid opening with base commander's convenience. Bids require at least 10 percent escrow by check. remainder due within three days after bid acceptance.
Senate subcommittee restored two budget cuts for the Fort Hall irrigation system after Sen. Dworshak pressed for relief. Restored $29,300 funds cover operation and maintenance. $40,000 for siphon construction resumes, adding $35,000 for siphon completion and $5,000 for lateral work. The siphon would enable 2,300 more acres to be cultivated by Indians, aiding younger tribal members seeking independence.
Two Oakley residents Hal C. Mitton 19 and Ralph Mitton 26 and Merlin Arthur Watson 25 from Washington died when their truck overturned on a Burley Oakley highway near Oakley at about 7 30 p m. Coroner Vern B McCulloch said no inquest would be held. Two other men were injured.
More than 700 Idaho Eagles lodge members are expected for a four day convention starting Wednesday in Idaho Falls. Distinguished visitors include Edward Poss of Toledo grand worthy president and Robert Hansen of Milwaukee past grand worthy president. An excursion to Jackson Hole and Yellowstone National Park is planned Friday.
Washington notes form by Jesse Jones, former Reconstruction Finance Corp. chairman, listing six reasons for ongoing business gains. He cites urgent construction needs, public utilities expansion, underfunded railroads highways schools hospitals and civic projects, and industry upgrades.

Cottonwood record reports Robert Gray 19 of Culdesac killed in a Saturday night rollover on a curve. Don Miller 19 of Winchester escaped with minor injuries and was treated at a local hospital. Gray died instantly of a broken neck. funeral services set for Lewiston Tuesday.
Stark County Prosecutor W Bernard Rodgers said a man who volunteered for the test would take it late today in connection with the deaths of two baby girls at City hospital. The test will be conducted in Cleveland after funeral services for the victims.
The agriculture department proposed adding 15 pounds of sugar per person for home canning while household rationing remains. James H. Marshall said even with extra allotments, sugar has not met demand, and removing controls could hurt small industrial users. End of rationing depends on shipment to Cuba, maritime strikes, and domestic consumption.
A heavy rain and flood hit Oregon and Washington during cherry harvest, causing at least one death and extensive damage. Mrs. Michael Yallup of Toppenish died in a tent near The Dalles when a flash flood swept through. A Baker Ore. man, Pincan, rescued his children as a wall of water swept away their truck. The Red Cross reported over 50 people saved by clinging to debris and trees. Fruit growers estimate orchard losses and a multi million dollar impact on northwest farmers.
Twin Falls faces a June 17 liquor by the drink election as 1032 new voters registered at city hall ahead of the deadline. Absentee ballots total 89, with both wets and dries urging turnout while the Twin Falls League of Women Voters launches a get out the vote effort.
The weatherman predicts fair and warmer weather for Pocatello and vicinity starting tomorrow. After recent days of unsettled conditions, forecasters caution that the trend must be confirmed by observation.
In Moscow Idaho the north Idaho Tussock moth program is about 40 percent complete as weather slows work. Project coordinator BE H Myrick says 142,700 acres have been sprayed on 836 plane trips. Entomologist J C Evenden notes rains delay caterpillar hatching but will not stop the DDT oil based spray from remaining effective all summer.
A Greyhound bus and a passenger car collided head on near Spangle Washington killing two car occupants Robert Cole and Eugene Nelson and injuring eight others. Passengers in the car included Andrew Calhoun Bill Schaffer and six bus riders with injuries ranging from skull fractures to shock. The bus was en route to Spokane from Pendleton with the crash leaving the car demolished.
The Daughters of the Union Veterans of the Civil War Idaho department will hold its 22nd annual state convention in NAMPA tomorrow. Department president Mrs. Mary Collins said national president Cora E. Gillis of Jamestown New York will be the principal speaker.
Challenger Airlines announced daily service between Salt Lake City and Billings with stops at Kemmerer Rock Springs Riverton Worland Greybull and Powell Cody Lovell from Powell and Lander from Riverton. Douglas DC-3 airliners will operate as on the Salt Lake City to Denver route begun May 3. A Denver to Billings leg will be added later.
Former Idaho Governor H. Clarence Baldridge aged 78 died in his sleep from a cerebral hemorrhage. Baldridge, a Republican who served two terms from 1927 to 1931, remained active until his death and was found by his daughter L. Gail Baldridge.
Massillon police questioned six children at a city hospital after two nine to ten week old girls were found dying from skull fractures in room 407. Police Chief Stanley W Switter said the deaths are being treated as possibly accidental as investigators talk with children aged six and eight and plan to question a third.
Idaho State college opened registration for a nine week summer session and expects total enrollment around 500. Registrar Ann B. Capelen predicts the largest summer term since 1928 while Dr. R C Stevenson notes strong veteran attendance. Students move into Graveley hall and other dormitories as dining at the university hall is planned with Graveley closed until fall.
The 15th annual encampment moved indoors as rain and wind hit the opening day. More than 1,000 attended memorial services and sessions while the parade was rescheduled to 5 p.m. Wednesday with entertainer Guy Kibbee set to appear at the Memorial building in Pocatello.
Americans in Budapest report the Hungarian American Oil Company faced a buyout offer from communists and was denied admission to the relief agency Care. The firm, led largely by Standard Oil interests, may still be nationalized by the new regime. Also in the Soviet sphere Dimitrov says the arrest of Nikolai Petrov is a Bulgarian home question and Romania's Petru Groza remains in power.
An insurance underwriter's report assigns full responsibility for the April Texas City explosion to the detonation of two cargo vessels at the docks. The chemical engineer George Armistead Jr. states the blasts arose from ammonium nitrate ignition after a fire, excluding plant involvement.
Pre game ticket sales for June 17 at Halliwell park list Twin Falls versus the Poca tello Cardinals. Tickets priced 75 cents go to the game, with 35 cents donated by the Cardinals to the Girl Scouts to fund Jeanne Gottfredson as the organization delegate to the world meeting. The event marks "the women join the girls" night as the Cards face the Cowboys.
