Lyredon correspondents describe the Messines battle as British forces advance after a tremendous mine explosion that opened earth and made the German line disappear. The scene is likened to an earthquake and the library reports a Red Cross benefit tea raising a large donation. The Fairview patriots continue monthly Red Cross contributions.
San Juan Del Sur Nicaragua dated June 8 reports San Salvador the capital with 60 000 people has been totally destroyed. No details on the destruction are given but it is likely due to earthquake or volcanic eruption. Tegucigalpa dispatch adds Quezal Tipeque Nejapa Suchichoto Paisnel Armenios and Mejicanos also destroyed. An operator near the scene said San Salvador lay in ruins and devastation spread thirty miles.
AAP dispatch reports Von Hindenburg rushing vast German forces to stop a British retreat advancing across northern France. The drive threatens Lille and the industrial region as battles rage along the western front. By nightfall six thousand prisoners had been taken since the new Belgian drive began.
Three carloads of pipe arrived for the new water system on West Pocatello. Water will be carried to Trail Creek springs providing pure water for West Pocatello buyers. Bardson company has employed over fifty men for three weeks on the system as part of permanent improvements. West Center Street hosts the West Pocatello Securities company offices.
The Red Cross announces new members Mrs. Chas. J. Hocahison Mrs. W. K. White and Mrs LM Nixon join this week. Prospective members urged to apply to secretary Mrs. L. W. Bartlett at 8 South Harrison with checks payable to the American Red Cross. Receipts for Membership Day nearly complete.

Washington announces General Manager Goethals dismissed F. A. Eustis of Boston assistant general manager and F. H. Clark the engineer who originated the wooden fleet idea after statements charging him with delaying the ship building program.
Boise June 8 Guy Graham Idaho state horticultural commissioner surveys fruit companies in the state with evaporating facilities fearing car and canning shortages when harvests move next fall. He urges orchardists to arrange temporary fruit storage as a precaution.
London report confirms five American survivors from the steamship Southland, formerly Vaderland, a 25 000 ton liner. The wreck occurred after the vessel met disaster at sea with ownership and fate noted in contemporary dispatches.
The Mexican government sent reproductions of famous Aztec sculptures to Rodin in Paris as a gesture. Rodin promised to send a reproduction of one of his works to the National Academy of Fine Arts in Mexico City in return.

Moscow Idaho June 8 seventy two degrees will be conferred at the University of Idaho on Friday but only 35 seniors are expected to attend due to calls to the officers reserve camp and the farm. Absent graduates will receive degrees later. Rev Jonathan Watson of Grand Forks ND will preach the commencement sermon. Dean Le Baron Briggs of Harvard University will deliver the address. Commander of the American forces in Europe arrives safely and says Yankee boys will soon smash the Western Front with an English brigadier as aide.
Washington dispatch reports General Pershing travels with 198 officers enlisted men and other attaches. The party departed more than a week ago without publicity.
A Chautauqua association meeting in the Commercial club rooms organized a ticket campaign with about forty attendees. President H. R. Freeland led district captains as they assigned workers and reported back in a second gathering to urging public support and ticket purchases for affordable access to renowned singers and speakers. The committees work for public benefit with no commissions.
Paris June 8 Colonel Fahry in the Petit Parisien described General Pershing s mission in France as highly arduous noting the force will not be a single expeditionary corps but a real army that will expand with new contingents and hold an expanding front.
General Pershing and staff landed at a British port escorted by American destroyers. A formal welcome by admiralty and war office officials included a guard of honor and Royal Welsh Fusiliers band. Pershing praised the voyage and said the party would soon play its part for civilization.
Col T H Goodwin, leading medical officer of the Balfour commission, urged the American Medical Association to send 20 doctors and 200 nurses to the western front monthly to aid wounded in brief urgent lines. He warned that 20,000 to 30,000 wounded could overwhelm hospitals if not treated on site and stressed medical men must be on the firing line for proper care.
Chicago wheat priced at 2.24 per bushel with corn at 1.565 per bushel and oats at 0.507 per bushel, reflecting grain market levels for the day.

Two boys aged 13 and 11, David Nelson and Delbert Nelson, were found asleep in an alley between First and Second avenues at about 1 am. They had left Shelly yesterday afternoon claiming to head toward Utah, said they planned a short summer trip, and hoped to return home when their parents were contacted. The father will collect them in the city today.
Washington June 8 Senator Harding of Ohio disclosed in the senate that lack of public confidence was retarding subscriptions to the liberty loan. He said in the interest of unity senators were withholding information that might call for an investigation and shake confidence in war conduct.
Herbert S. Hadley, former Missouri governor, has accepted a professorship in the University of Colorado law school. He will move to Boulder at once and is noted as a familiar figure in national Republican circles.
The Store Department team of the Short Line League led by Grayson defeated the M P M team 7 to 5 to pull ahead from a tied first place. Phillips pitched well for M P M but four errors cost him. Grayson homered and doubled in three visits. Next game June 12 features Car Department versus Round House.
A dispatch reports a 6:35 to 8:45 am sequence of strong earthquakes in Washington with growing intensity. At 8:45 San Salvador volcano erupted on the Quetzaltepeque side, followed by a severe later shock. Ash shower covered the city and the American legation building was rendered uninhabitable.
In San Juan on June 8 a heavy rainstorm left Santa Tecla destroyed and residents of San Salvador sheltering in streets and parks. The report notes five hours of continuous rainfall at the time it was transmitted.
Dispatch from Washington reports American Minister Long in San Salvador says a portion of the city was burned as the volcano erupted. Great destruction followed with some parts under control later.
In San Juan on June 8 authorities attributed the disaster to the eruption of the San Salvador volcano. Local officials and residents awaited official confirmation and assessed damage across affected areas.
The sheriff received a wire from U S federal agent in Salt Lake City directing a complaint against W J Sealey of McCammon for not registering and for insulting the flag. Commissioner Dave Turner will hear the complaint. Sheriff Mabey was told to appear before Turner. Additional suspects are under investigation with possible arrests forthcoming.
In the county courthouse this afternoon Justice Van Reuth will hear the case State of Idaho versus Pierre Servel and Xavier Servel. They are charged with grazing sheep on cattle land known as the Gittens range. G. W. Gittins swore the complaint, and multiple witnesses are set to testify for both sides.
