Saipan to Lead Greenland Rescue of 11 Air Force Fliers
The USS Saipan is ordered from Norfolk to Greenland to rescue 11 Air Force fliers stranded atop a 7700 foot ice cap. Helicopters will be landed in southwest Greenland rescue area after five days at sea. Christmas leave is canceled for 1200 Saipan crew. A rival plan from aviator Roy Lamoureux proposes a Cessna 195 ski-assisted tow to free the men.

Tragedy at Simplot Plant Claims De Vere Anderson
De Vere Anderson 40, of 114 Pen neuf Park, was killed instantly at 4 pm Thursday when his heavy Caterpillar rolled onto him while on a stock pile at the Simplot Fertilizer plant north of Pocatello. Witnesses and Simplot officials cite the machine tipping over the edge and unable to stop it. Coroner Skip Davis cites death by shock and head wounds. He leaves wife Emma and three children Larry, Betty Jean, and Clee Ann. Funeral arrangements pending.
