Admiral Evans proclaims a plan to circle the globe by wireless as navy chief heads plans for a grand welcome for warships docking at Rio de Janeiro. The statement signals a major maritime push with a ceremonial host at Rio in anticipation of naval displays.
Rear Admiral Evans reports the battleship fleet arrived at Trinidad. Secretary Metcalf says no decision on return route yet and will take time. Officials expect a possible flight home via Suez next summer or fall with some ships remaining in the Pacific. Rio welcomes the fleet with formalities and social events in January.

Official from the Short Line division in Pocatello announces December 29 as the date trains Nos. 3 and 4 from Pocatello to Huntington and Nos. 5 and 16 from Salt Lake to Pocatello are pulled off. A Montpelier to McCammon local will replace them, and the Boise to Weiser Pony will resume to serve local traffic between those points. The change reflects no westward connection at Huntington and aims to serve local riders between Montpelier McCammon and Utah.
Wallace Idaho faced a Sunday shut down of the Rocky Mountain Bell Telephone exchange after local authorities enforced Idaho Sunday rest law. Manager F C Lewis was arrested, pleaded not guilty, then convicted and fined twenty five dollars. The company indicated it will obey the law.
Boise report states the state rested its case after Justice W. H. Gabbert of Colorado testified about a bombing attempt. Judge Wood ruled corroborative evidence insufficient to convict for Steunenberg’s murder and held that conspiracy cannot be proven by uncorroborated accomplice testimony.
Washington reports President accepts Rear Admiral Willard Brownson resignation from the bureau of navigation effective immediately. Captain Cameron M. Winslow named to succeed him. No reason given for the move.
The city council held a special meeting to pass a Sunday closing ordinance for its first reading. All members except Aldermen Martin and Fusz attended. The measure aligns with state law and tasks police to enforce Sunday closing. A $55 street work bill by Joseph Hawkes was approved. The administration aims to tighten controls in Pocatello.
In Denver on December 24 Judge R E Lewis granted a motion to quash indictments against EK M Riggs president and Charles D McPhee and J J McGinnity directors of the New Mexico Lumber Company and Charles H Freeman and W W Nossaman of Durango for conspiracy to defraud timber lands in Arehuleta county Colorado. The court also quashed indictments against A T Sullenberger president of Pagosa Lumber Company and others for related charges.
Washington December 24 Mrs Lone worth has recovered from an appendicitis operation performed December 1 at the White House. She plans to leave the residence Thursday to return to her own home.
Chicago on December 24 reports Adam Ortseifen of a brewing company predicting a barley shortage will close about a thousand saloons by May 1. He warns breweries face crippling costs and no profits, foreseeing a barrel price rise as a result.
Green River reports three dead babies found in a few days along with a murder of an old man and a man killed on the Fish Cat grade. The spree includes five men killed in the yards Monday, all feeding a high state of consternation.
Five men were killed in the last twenty four hours in Louisiana and Mississippi amid Christmas fights. Victims include three negroes and two whites with motives ranging from love affairs to money disputes. Tra Call of Bancroft, a merchant, is in Pocatello on business.
The Typographical Union hall at McNichols Wright tonight hosts an event showing live newspaper making. A small press will print periodical editions of The Hell Box on the dance floor and reveal the intersan process of issuing a paper. An article on leap year eligibles among local union members will appear.
The Memphis Savings Bank failed to open on December 24. Receiver FE B. McHenry was appointed. President C. W. McCrea and cashier E. L. Manager led a bank with deposits over one and a half million dollars. President S. P. Read of the Clearing Trust says suspensions won’t affect other banks and depositors will be paid in full.
In Jacobs Creek Pennsylvania rescuers reached entry No 27 at the Darr mine finding seventy four bodies in a heap raising the total recovered to one hundred twenty.
New York on December 24 reports over 120000 people will receive Christmas dinners from the Salvation Army. Dinners are assembled in family baskets for five, containing five pounds of chicken vegetables coffee tea milk bread and plum puddings for distribution.
Roanoke Virginia Dee 24 A Christmas surprise from Mrs William Luck of Toy City today produced two boys and two girls for her husband. All four infants are reported thriving.
Gus Weilin, formerly of Pocatello and now in Kansas City, has invented 14 new improvements to the Mergenthaler linotype machine since leaving Idaho last spring, bringing his total to 18 inventions plus an addressing machine being perfected in Wallin's Kansas City workshop. M. D. Good of St. Joe, Missouri, head of the Wallin Addressing Machine & Manufacturing Co, a half million dollar firm formed to handle the inventions, is in the city and reports progress toward marketing Wallin's adaptations. The inventor's success comes as the Wallin company pushes to place the new devices on the market.

The move follows growing concerns over liquidity with tight money supply and public stress pervading financial centers. Bank officials warn customers to expect delays and limited cash availability in the run up to the holiday season.

Frank Merrifield married Augusta Kohl at the bride’s parents home 532 North Hayes avenue. Rev. Hunt conducted the ceremony with reception and a sooper. The couple left for Los Angeles and plan to be at home January 10 at the Kohl residence. Merrifield is an extra engineer on the Short Line out of Pocatello.
Special correspondence from Moscow Idaho notes Idaho Washington and Oregon leading a movement to keep college athletics amateur. Idaho varsity coach Middleton marries in Spokane on December 15 and Idaho beats Lewiston High School 39 to 17 in an out-of-town game. The state university hires F A Rapp for railway engineering and surveying to support planned regional rail development. Idaho varsity schedules a January 10 basketball meet with Fort Wright in Spokane. The English club stages a modern western life play, while many new students enroll after holiday vacation. Mrs W J Secor visits from St Anthony to join her husband MAiefice foreman. They will live on North Third avenue.
