Administration advisers say President Roosevelt will press for public confidence in his January message to Congress. They expect a strong case that the recession is largely psychological, with no new reforms but a clear bid to push his legislative program and cooperate with legitimate business while maintaining current regulations.
Police dropped further investigation into the death of film comedian Ted Healy after an autopsy found natural causes. Healy died at home after an earlier cut over his eye and bruises sparked rumors of a fight near the Tropadero club in Hollywood. He had celebrated the birth of a son with his wife hospitalized in Culver City. The report notes sources say no foul play was found.
E. D. Baird of the Ida ho Jackson day committee in Boise heads the Idaho Democratic finance drive under the DNC. Proceeds retire the national deficit and fund the 1938 effort. Subscriptions come from county chairs nationwide. A January 8 closing dinner in each state features Governor David Shultz of Florida as Idaho speaker at Hotel Boise.
Decorate Tree Roy T Hale and W H Jensen announced the county Christmas tree in the southwest corner of the courthouse grounds will be strung with lights and decorated for the season. Sheriff M J Rossiter said he expects the lights to be in place tonight.
Mrs Eva Hunt Dockery Idaho Daily Statesman society editor was taken to St Alphonsus hospital with a paralytic stroke. Her condition was reported fair by Dr F A Pittenger. Her husband E J Dockery Boise attorney and former law partner of Senator James P Pope.
William H. Gess surrendered his post as warden of Idaho State Penitentiary following the death by suicide of Douglas Van Vinck, a triple killer, two weeks earlier. The Idaho Supreme Court issued a writ directing transfer to Deputy Warden H. Rex Smith after Gess submitted his resignation to Governor Clark's secretary. Attorney General J. W. Taylor had requested the writ on December 18, with the prison board voting to oust Gess amid concerns of laxities.
The U S Civil Service Commission announces open competitive exams for Junior tabulating machine operator and alphabetic accounting machine operator at 1440 a year, Inspector of railway signaling and train control at 3800, and mathematical statistical analyst grades at 2600 to 4600. Information from Miss McLaughlin Secretary of the U S Civil Service Board of Examiners at the city post office.
Occasional snow from tonight into Thursday moves across Idaho with cooler air especially in the northern portion. Snow showers may reduce visibility and gusty winds are possible as a cold front sweeps through the region.
H. C. Mann of the Union Pacific predicted the current business lull would be temporary as he spoke during the display of the 17 car City of Los Angeles train in Ogden. He noted strong holiday passenger travel and growing freight like Idaho potatoes and Utah canned goods, while the luxury streamliner prepared for a 39 hour run from Los Angeles to Chicago.
Several thousand Pocaans queued for a chance to board the City of Los Angeles on its return from Sun Valley. The train was inspected from 4 30 to 6 p m and then departed for Ogden to meet its schedule, leaving many unable to board before departure.
Congress adjourned the special session after the Senate passed the housing bill 66 to 4 and left major administration measures unfinished. Leaders say the 12 day recess trims the 1938 session to begin anew in January while farm and housing items await action. Democratic Barkley calls it a shortening of the regular session. Republican McNary deems the session a failure but expects a May finish unless new recommendations arrive.
The board of county commissioners discussed a bond election to fund a new 100 bed general hospital in Pocatello, estimating about 350 000 dollars. Roy T. Hale urged the plan as urgently needed, with hospital leaders and chamber figures detailing bond and facility considerations.
Floyce Harrison 40 beat his estranged wife to death with a hammer as their four year old son slept beside them. He then killed himself with a pocket knife. Police Chief Kaelin said he had tried to take their 15 year old daughter and left a note blaming the wife for not raising a dog or a girl.
Preliminary hearing for Percy Walters charged with man slaughter in the death of his nine month old son George Whitt will be held Thursday at 10 a m before Justice William Hinckley. Walters is held under 5000 dollar bond while his wife jointly charged is released on 2500 dollar bond.

Refugees to Canton by a flag decorated train. 30,000 troops reportedly moved from Shanghai. Chinese mills burned dormitories. authorities vow to resist any attack with full force.
Salvage officials aboard the stranded President Hoover survey conditions after a November storm. The ship lies broadside on a reef near Hashioto island, Formosa, with guard ships aboard to protect mails. The President Grant is due December 24 to evacuate remaining crew and passengers.
Registration extended to Friday for the chamber of commerce home decoration contest. Entries include Mike Kubiak Charles Zweigart Sydney Geisenberg R W Rossiter John E Long C G Wells Mildred Holste Charles H Cannon and Thomas Wilson. Participants may register at the chamber office or Atkin Florist on West Center. Displays remain until after Jan 2 1938 when judging occurs.
R. T. Hale, chairman of the county board, announced a Christmas Eve party and tree for eleven elderly residents at the county farm north of the city. Arrangements include a special dinner with all the fixings.
Washington dispatch reports the American Federation of Labor weighing a divide and conquer strategy against the CIO after peace talks collapse. The AFL may seek to pull the Ladies' Garment Workers from the CIO and show unity by expelling the United Mine Workers and Amalgamated Clothing Workers at an upcoming Miami council meeting.
Harold Hinkley, chairman, reported the Elks Charity Bull at the Elks temple Saturday evening raised over 900 dollars for the Elk Christmas fund. The money will buy Christmas baskets coal and clothing for city needy. He thanked the Tribune Journal for strong support making the event a success.
A marriage license was issued yesterday in Brigham City Utah to Earl Lavon Noble age 20 of Rupert Idaho and Mary Emma May age 17 of Rockland Idaho. The record notes both parties are residents of Idaho.
A barometer fall from one of the year’s high readings to a very low level by today noon prompted H. H. Smith Jr of the U S Weather Bureau to forecast possible snow tonight and Thursday. He cautioned that snow amounts and ground coverage remain uncertain despite the white Christmas question. A storm north of Pocatello and a blizzard near Helena caused airline groundings between Salt Lake City and Great Falls.
Byron Whizzer White, star halfback for Colorado, was delayed by rain over Tucson and was not expected to arrive in Fort Worth until noon. Colorado coach Bunny Oakes planned to push ahead with practice at Texas Christian University stadium despite drizzle as Rice Owls await in the Cotton Bowl on New Year’s.
