The American seven masted schooner Thomas W. Lawson wrecked off Hughtown Scilly Islands during a gale. Three bodies found, claim eighteen drowned. Lifeboats reached too late as the vessel sank in Broad Sound with rescue unsuccessful.
London reports continued fierce gales along the coast with inland swamps flooding low lands. Numerous small wrecks occur and several vessels seek shelter. The American schooner Lawson is among notable losses and the cutter from the gunboat Speedwell sank near Sherme with only five of thirteen crew saved. Thames valley remains flooded.
The senate confirmed J. Frank Hunt as receiver of the Blackfoot land office and A. J. McMahon as register of the land office at Hailey, Washington announced on December 14.
The preliminary examination of A C Jacques on the charge of assault with intent to kill was resumed this morning before Justice of the Peace Masonheimer but noon. The hearing was postponed until Tuesday afternoon to allow stereographers time to transcribe the existing evidence. By stipulation the defense may introduce another witness when the hearing resumes.
J. G. Camp notes in the Barley Bulletin that Idaho has received 1 38 407 more than it contributed to the reclamation fund as of December 31, 1907. Idaho received 5 277 048 while contributing 3 039 541. Additional allocations include 450 000 for Payette Boise and 60 000 for Minidoka for 1908. The director says future payments will cover south side work once machinery arrives in eight months to a year.
Chicago December 14 A bill of exceptions in the appeal of the Standard Oil company of Indiana from the twenty nine million fine was signed by Judge Landis and filed in the court of appeals. The full record is expected to be filed in a few weeks with a hearing on appeal soon.
A Preston incident reports Joseph Johnson igniting coal oil and cotton while cleaning a flue. He yanked the vessel full of burning oil at entry, engulfing him the mother and infant. The child died soon after and Mrs. Johnson remains critically burned and disfigured.
Nevada California Power Company crews including electricians engineers and carpenters returned to work under a truce reached last night. The agreement paves the way for establishing a low wage scale while negotiations continue.
The bark Ed und Phingey ran aground on the east side of Sandy Hook in a heavy morning storm. Life savers could not launch due to huge seas and failed to reach the vessel despite attempts by two tugs and a power boat. Ten or twelve men remained in the rigging watching the rescue efforts.
Francis J. Heney, who leads municipal graft prosecutions, departs for Portland to review Oregon land fraud cases, then heads to Washington to confer with justice officials. He plans to return for the February 1 trial of Patrick Calhoun, president of the United Railways, on bribery charges to supervisors.
Leithon Coleman Episcopal bishop of Delaware died this morning in Wilmington after a week of illness from a severe cold that developed into kidney trouble.
Ephraim Ralphs, a bishop of the Oneida county L D S church, is in Pocatello today on business. His home is at Rockland.
A gang of sixty robbers ambushed a mail train between Tiflis and Baku near Salakestu. The guard force repulsed the attackers after a bloody battle leaving four robbers dead. The train derailed after thirty yards of track were torn up. eight bombs were thrown and soldiers and passengers were wounded as troops pursue the fugitives.
Five members of the local Miners' union seized a carpenter at work on the Bell Telephone building in Butte and escorted him to their hall. The man later vanished amid threats of a riot. Bell workers have been boycotted in Montana since a March strike of linemen and operators, while union labor faces a federal court injunction from Judge Hunt. The judge’s forthcoming action remained uncertain.
Isaac Devine, 60, was found guilty of murder in the second degree for shooting Al Cummings near Twin Falls on August 3. He will be sentenced Monday. the prosecution was aided by Jesse B. Hawley of Boise. Devine spent part of the summer in the county jail for safe keeping. Cummings was a ditch rider for the Twin Falls company.
W. C. Milligan foreman of Grant Construction says 500 to 1000 men will be employed this winter on the Twin Falls North Side canal project. Multiple camps are set, with heavy machinery arriving including wheel scrapers elevating graders dump wagons and plows to operate at all sites.
Captain and Mrs F Hall arrive from Beaumont Texas to head Salvation Army efforts in Pocatello. They plan an open air meeting at 3 p.m. tomorrow and a jail meeting at 10 a.m. at the ball room. They aim to distribute Christmas boxes to needy families and request tips on deserving homes by leaving addresses at the hall.
Washington dispatch says Postmaster General Meyers orders postmasters to forward letters addressed to Santa Claus to responsible agents rather than the dead letter office. Letters arriving from children will be delivered to organized charitable societies in the reporter’s city to act as Santa Claus agents.
Superintendent Lipps receives a Washington letter outlining a new policy to allow competent Indians to handle income beyond rents and allotment proceeds. The May 1907 decision granted 270 Nez Perce permission to manage their own allotments, marking a broader move from guardianship toward self rule.
J. 11 Daniger of the Troy laundry leaves tonight for Tenaho Nevada to inspect contract work done this summer on the Troy Mining Company mines. He will supervise the property and arrange for the resumption of work next spring and is expected to be away about ten days.
A severe snow storm that raged last night continues today in Chicago causing widespread transit delays. Five inches fell downtown and seven inches in the south, with the storm extending to the Atlantic coast.
State Game Warden W N Stephens touring Pocatello to Fremont county notes new license law boosts revenues. Last year license sales netted about 20000 with a 10 percent commission. this year 20000 to 27000 net and total sales from 33000 to 54000. Sales totals already exceed last year by 50 percent as more hunters buy licenses.
Christine Magdalene Thomas files for divorce on grounds of desertion and failure to provide from Emil Hugo Thomas. Married in Chicago on August 4, 1894, with two children Anna Marie age 9 and John Hugo Otto age 6. Case filed this morning. attorney Willis Reeves of record.
Kemp V. Biglow, a Denver clerk, pleaded guilty to assault with intent to kill Governor Henry A. Buechtel, Lawrence Phipps, and Charles Bountze, and to a confidence game. The court will hear evidence Monday before sentencing.
Ben Bean aims to land at least a nine pounder in a Portneuf river contest with Dutch Lehrbas. Leon Molinelli will accompany to teach the trick as Lehrbas leads the race for piscatorial honors.
New statute bars railroads from coal business except for their own use, effective January 1. Union Pacific and others have been accused of using transport power to control prices, but the Hepburn law aims to force divestiture and spur independent mines. The U P plans to expand Wyoming coal fields, aiming for 10,000 tons daily, with multiple mine extensions.
In Horse on December 14 Clarence Darrow resumed cross examination of Orchard. Senator Borah objected to Darrow’s method claiming argumentative tactics. Judge Wood cautioned Darrow to avoid arguing with the witness as Orchard continued his testimony about attempts to kill Bradley.
The Elks Lodge in Pocatello will distribute gifts to the deserving poor this year. Exalted Ruler Wright has named a committee to handle distribution and asks those with names and addresses of needy families to notify the committee.
