Lloyd A. Lehrbas AP foreign staff writer returned to New York aboard the Rex with a passport covering four continents and more than 50 000 miles. He filed frontline reports from Warsaw Lwow Budapest Bucharest and Turkey and covered events from the Sino Japanese War to Europe’s current conflict.
Boise announces 26 committees to carry the American Legion program in Idaho. Lester F. Albert, department adjutant, says some chairmen were set at the Twin Falls convention last August while others were chosen at a Boise executive committee meeting over the weekend.
The United States government spent 600 to buy 3 000 dozen fresh first eggs and bid up 1 cent to 20 cents a dozen. It also offered to buy 144 000 standard eggs, lifting the bid 4 cents to 24 cents, though no offers were made. Dr John Huttar of the Grange League of Farmers executed the purchase on the New York Mercantile Exchange for home relief use.
Independence, Mo. housewife seeks help from Assistant Police Chief Hall Phillips as her husband refuses to quit drinking. She describes a spree of drastic actions including broom strikes, locking out, leaving, taking him back, filing and withdrawing a divorce, cold water, hot coffee, and a dental injury before ending her own alcohol abstinence.
Fire Chief A A Girard warns Pocatello residents to secure trees away from heat and lights, use non inflammable decorations, avoid open candles, and choose compliant electric sets. He cautions against fuel lamp toys, cheap electric toys, and dangerous pageant costumes, advising borax boric spray for fire resistant decorations and immediate disposal of tissue paper.
The Community Concert association directors outline upcoming shows including Jooss Ballet on Feb 20, Ionian Singers on Feb 1, Pocatello Symphony on Mar 19, and Malcolm and Godden on Apr 8. Guest artist Mrs. Josephine Berryman to perform December 19 with Schubert Symphony No. 7 and works by Beethoven DeBussey Wagner.
Hollywood reports actress Mary Pickford's former husband Douglas Fairbanks Sr died at his Santa Monica beach home after a day of illness from a heart attack. He aged 56, survived by widow Lady Sylvia Ashley and brother Robert, with son Douglas Jr. asked to come at once. Fairbanks famed as a star of thrill and romance wed Pickford in 1920 and later divorced amid public marital turmoil.
A series of blasts ripped nearly 40 miles of Shell Pipe Line's 10 inch main near Wichita Falls Texas injuring one worker Roy H Brinckley WPA employee whose car was hit as the line crossing a highway. The line runs from Wink Texas to Chicago and the blasts rattled windows in Henrietta Texas as sections were torn from the ground and stood on end.
Idaho activist Ray McKaig of Boise urges the Republican Party to nominate Democrat Senator Wheeler of Montana for president. He says Wheeler is the only national executive with proper measurements and criticizes spending and debt. He argues Western farmers oppose a third term.
Charles R. Walgreen, who started as an $18-a-week clerk and built a chain of nearly 500 Walgreens in 39 states, died aged 66 after months of illness. He borrowed to buy his first Chicago store in 1902, paid off in four years, and shortly before his death resigned the presidency with his son C R Walgreen Jr. as president. private funeral services planned in Dixon Illinois.
A Chamber of Commerce sub committee met with the city council to discuss the annual Christmas lighting project. The council appropriated 25 toward the project and two large trees were purchased. The council also decided to call for bids on 40 acres of old town site land near the reservoir.
Cleveland economist Col. Leonard P. Ayres forecasts 1940 growth with industrial output around 110 and national income near 71 billion dollars. He expects building contracts to top any prior recovery year, imports down, exports up, and gains in department store sales and rail freight. He notes war and politics complicate forecasting but cites a long, successful track record.
Rosqvist secretary of the Pocatello Labor Council wins the Idaho State Federation of Labor referendum 1007 to 269 over H A Hansen after a dispute over the state secretary election. President William Green ordered the vote with Leo F. Flint of Seattle conducting the canvass and declaring the result.
In Portland Taft says the people will not accept a third term and want a 1940 Housecleaning. In Newark Ickes urges a third Roosevelt term as essential to democracy, while General Johnson argues it would perpetuate the Roosevelt dynasty. He warns of a fourth term and beyond.
Governor Bottolfsen granted a reprieve to W. C. Ames a 30 year old Pocatello truck driver who after pleading guilty in 1939 to taking 12 dollars worth of wheat was sentenced to six months in county jail. The clemency request cited his elderly mother and two children. He may seek a pardon at the January pardon board session. Endorsers noted Ames had no prior criminal record.
Pocatello Lions heard Dan Martin speak on Lionism at a regular meeting. The Pocatello ladies chorus directed by Rudolph Goranson provided music. New members Dr. E. V. Simison and Emil Silfest were introduced. Plans were laid for the annual Christmas party at the Highway Inn Monday evening with extra tickets obtainable from F. E. Birreli.
The Republican program committee led by Dr. Glenn Frank has drafted platform planks since 1937. About 200 members circulate drafts, with a possible early filing to the national committee next year. Some leaders push to delay the report to avoid Democratic attacks and intra party friction.
Action filled Legion workouts in the Memorial building basement showcased top contenders for next Friday's card. Chief Ballard demonstrated why he is viewed as the leading middleweight in the intermountain states alongside Charley Lavatta Speck Andrus and other contenders. Glen Peck of Alameda impressed onlookers with an aggressive style and a driving right hand. Miles Valenty and Irish O'Connor displayed sharp rights and lefts and eagerness to mix it. Another public workout is set for tonight and Thursday at 7 with no admission charge.
Reuters dispatch from Geneva says Russia has until 10 a m tomorrow to reply to the League telegram seeking mediation in the Finnish conflict. Helsinki reports a large Russian offensive halted on the eastern front with heavy Russian losses and fierce fighting on the Karelian isthmus. The League prepares a condemnation of Soviet aggression as Britain claims air superiority over Germany and the Bremen liner nears home after avoiding British forces.
